Book Description

April 27 2006
Forget Cinderella and the hundreds of other fairy tales about wicked stepmothers. Here is the truth—a warm, bright, positive, yet frankly honest and realistic celebration of the most challenging role any woman will face. Think of it as the joy of stepmomming, and the perfect Mother’s Day gift of encouragement and support. Written and illustrated by Cynthia L. Copeland, a stepmother to three boys and author of the bestselling Really Important Stuff My Kids Have Taught Me, THE 312 BEST THINGS ABOUT BEING A STEPMOM is packed with humor, wisdom, empathy, quotes, and testimonials from dozens of stepmothers who have shared their experiences with the author.

So, if being a stepmother seems so often to be a storm cloud, this is the silver lining. For example: People can’t figure out how old you are by the ages of your stepchildren. Or, When they hug you, you know it’s genuine, not out of habit. You didn’t have to agonize over whether to name your stepson after his grandfather, his rich uncle, or your favorite poet. If you ever go ahead and have kids of your own, you’ve had practice. And if you are already a parent: The trip to the warehouse club is finally worth the gas money. Your step-teens will see to it that your younger kids are up on the latest cool music, video games, and cargo pants. Family counsel now has enough people for a house and a senate. And, With so many more participants, there’s a chance that you won’t always get creamed at Scrabble!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Warm, Upbeat, Insightful, and Inspiring Book Feb 27 2008
By Jill Tamari - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a must-read for all stepmoms and stepmoms-to-be. I received it as a gift when I first became a stepmother, and the positive tone, real-life stories, and honest advice helped me get through what would have been one of the most difficult transitions in my life. Whenever times became difficult or I felt isolated in my struggles, I could always turn to this little book for insight, whether humorous or serious. It truly offers a warm and inspiring view of stepmotherhood. Cynthia Copeland's wit and wisdom shine through in this wonderful book. I adore this book, and I recommend it to all!

5.0 out of 5 stars So sweet! Mar 6 2010
By Wendy L. Deppe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What a wonderful little book! I was surprised to see a few other readers who felt they did not get much out it. When I picked this up I did not expect it to be an advice book, or even totally true for my stepmom experience all the time. Being a stepmom is the hardest and most thankless thing I have ever done, and it is a lifetime job, so I am looking forward to a lifetime of hard work and self-sacrifice. But as hard as it is, there are many wonderful things about being a stepmom (I wouldn't trade it for the world!), and this book is a great reminder to step back and look at the big picture and be thankful for the good times!

Even when happy moments such as described in this book are few and far between, it's so important to hold onto the positive. For me, it is the only thing that gets me through the negative!

I love how the author has broken the book into chapters:

Introduction: Stepmom Forecast
1). Stepping Up as the Other Mother--Universal Aspects of Stepmotherhood
2). Suddenly Stepmom--From Single Gal to Married with Children
3). Adding to the Flock--Combining Kids for a Real Life Brady Bunch
4). Nonstop Stepmom--When Your Stepchildren Live With You Fulltime
5). Baby Steps--Stepparenting Infants and Toddlers
6). Next Steps--The Middle Ages
7). Big Steps--Life with Tweens and Teens
8). Giant Steps--When Your Little Steps Are Finally Grown
9). Grown and Gone--Becoming a Stepmom When His Kids Are Adults
10). In Step with Your Husband--Making Your Marriage a Priority
Conclusion: Silver Linings Found

I also admire how the author has interspersed comments and stories from real stepmoms throughout the book. I always love to hear about other stepmoms! The illustrations are adorable, too.

Readers should know that not all chapters will apply to their own lives as a stepmom, and this is definitely not an advice book! This is more of a celebration, a time to think about the parts we enjoy about being a stepmom. But I think every stepmom should have a copy of this in their stepmom library!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Day Brightener! April 9 2008
By Barbara Sheldon, M.S.W. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Okay, most days I can come up with three, maybe four!

I was surprised to pick up this book, start reading for a minute, and then find myself completely enthralled. Positive, upbeat, encouraging --- but without being unrealistic or trite.

This book is changing my attitude --- for the better!
