Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- Yolen has concocted a delightful volume of 21 poems that introduce witches and spectres of all types: feisty modern singles and tombmates with marital problems; witch druggists, pizza bakers, and school witches; old fashioned broom riders and spell makers; and one who rides a flying carpet. Many of her poems are the humorous, upbeat sort that attract young readers like magic. She has also included some silly poems, jump-rope rhymes, and several of a more sophisticated nature. Primavera has painted a panorama of witch personalities ranging from orange-haired vamps to knobby-chinned broomstick riders with frizzled hair--from ugly old hags to young wide-eyed children. A sense of humor pervades. Most of the two-page watercolor illustrations are painted on color-washed backgrounds. Special effects--misty, ghost-like apparitions, shadowy monsters, sparkling stardust, and creeping fog--highlight many pages. Only three poems mention Halloween; children will enjoy this collection all year long. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

I borrowed this book from my school library, since I was doing an Authorshare project for English. I was a bit surprised when I read this book, because the poetry was GREAT!!! She did some poems from a ghost's point of view, and they were funny! I laughed out loud when I read one entitled, "The Grammatical Witch". It talked about a student talking about how they saw a witch, but the teacher corrects him; according to her, it wasn't a WHICH, it was a WHO. I really enjoyed the poetry in this book and reccomend it to others.
