Post-Apocalyptic Oblivion for the Road Warrior within you,
By
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Fallout 3 (Video Game)
If you played Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and loved it, this game is also for you. Where Oblivion was a very involved rpg with huge freedom for character upgrading and game direction based in Medieval-esque fantasy playing, Fallout 3 uses the same play system for a post apocalyptic world, replacing sword and sorcery with homemade guns, explosives, and melee weapons. Fallout 3 also gives you more freedom for the path you can take your character down: good, bad, or anywhere in between. The world can be overwhelming at first: finding out where places are, how to get around settlements, how to get money, who to talk to, but that's the fun. The world is wonderous for you just as it is for your character emerging from Vault 101. It feels like you are the Road Warrior Mad Max, fighting off Raiders and Slavers and causing ruckus.Very involved, worth the time, beautiful graphics of horrid landscapes. Know what kind of game this is before you play. Rate this game on the type of game it is, not what you thought it was gonna be. If it's not your type of game then don't rate it. Don't rate this game bad because you don't play rpgs and you thought it was gonna be a mindless game like DOOM or something.

I was hesitant to play this game because I heard that it was 100 hrs long, that it was glitchy and that the vats (the weapon autofocus system) sucks. I played this game for 130 hrs exploring about 160 locations and I was never bored. This game runs very smoothly considering the size, other than the goat test glitch where the teacher stands in front of the class and nothing happens. And I liked the vats system, it gave you time to react to an attack and by the end of the game after all the upgrades I was able to kill a super mutant with one or two shots using the system, not 12 like somebody else has said. This is basically a gathering game like Bioshock, there are 20 bobbleheads and about as many special guns hidden throughout the game. This game has a big learning arc, I spent the first 15 hrs starting and restarting the game trying to figure out how to develop my character and how to use the systems. For example, you can take meds to enhance your abilities. The best skill in the game is repair. Using repair you can combine two or three guns to make a super gun and this helps reduce the amount you carry in your inventory. If you let this game pass you by you made a big mistake. The good news is that the game of the year edition with all the expansion packs is going to be available this fall for the PS3.

Not a shooter,

This game is more RPG than First Person Shooter (it's much like Oblivion but with guns). It is an incredible game but only if you're interested in pursuing the quests and playing it for the variety. It's very open-ended but the writing and the action/strategy is unmatched. The strategy (VATS) aspect to the shooting also adds an RPG-like chance aspect that greatly improves the gameplay since you are constantly combining realtime battling with VATS. It just won Gametrailers.com's RPG of the year - and for good reason.
