    Better Chef Cordless Electric Kettle

this unit is dangerous to use due to a defective temp switch; the kettle DOES NOT consistently shut off and must too often be manually shut off. A definite fire hazard!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great, fair price. Jan. 14 2011

I ordered this to replace a Krups that had been used a dozen times a day for over a year. This review is based on comparison between the Better Chef, the Krups, and a Braun which I've also owned.

Unlike the other two models, the heating element coil is exposed. This doesn't favor super easy scrubbing, but nothing a vinegar soak or bottle brush can't handle.

The pop-up lid is basically the same as what Braun uses, and I highly prefer it to the Krups locking, twist on lid. It's just easier to manipulate (especially for someone with arthritis). Also, the lid on the Krups came apart slightly in only a month or so. Since it wasn't affecting use, I simply never bothered to get a new one.

The Better Chef heats very fast and performs well.

The base seems to have a slightly longer cord than either the Krups or Braun, but I could be recalling this incorrectly. I was unable to find any exact cord lengths on the internet.

I have not detected any foul plastic odors while heating nor any unpleasant plastic taste to the water.

It's easy to use- just flip the switch at the base of the kettle. The large, clear "window" on the kettle is great for making sure you don't overfill.

Overall, a solid product at a good price.

This is the best Tea Kettle ever. It's great not having to use the stove.
Does one to at least 5 cups at a time and very quickly.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Auto shut-off is unreliable Jan. 15 2013
By Rujith de Silva - Published on Amazon.com

The little water filter near the spout is held on by a tiny flimsy clip at
its bottom. When filling the kettle through the spout, the force of the
water makes the filter detach from the clip. When the water is boiling,
the auto shut-off is apparently meant to be activated by the steam in the
kettle. But the steam escapes past the detached filter, so that there
isn't enough steam inside the kettle to trigger the shut-off. So the
kettle boils incessantly (it does shut-off properly if the filter is in
place). This is a safety hazard. Another problem, more minor, is that the
switch doesn't click off even when the kettle is lifted off the base; the
kettle resumes boiling when put back on the base.

1.0 out of 5 stars DANGER! Possible FIRE hazard June 29 2013

On Aug 8, 2012 I ordered from Amazon.com the Better Chef Cordless Tea Kettle, White Model # IM-142W, Date Code 1138.
This purchase was made as a gift for my elderly mother and one of the primary reasons for selecting this type of pot is the safety feature of a pot that turns itself off.

Yesterday, June 28, 2013, my mother called to tell me that she had turned the pot on to make her tea and turned around to do something else (common, I do this regularly, turn the pot on and then go check on laundry, let the dog in or out, go grab the mail, whatever). She heard a noise and turned back to the pot as it BURST INTO FLAMES **INSIDE**, WITH WATER **IN** IT!

Thankfully she had not left the room as her pot, like mine, and I'm sure most folks, is sitting on the counter top under the upper cupboards. It could easily have been disastrous if she had.

Amazon is kindly refunding my purchase and Better Chef has been notified of this problem but USE CARE.
