Book Description

March 1997
Poets Have always been kinky.

Who are we? How did we get here? Where are we going? If the poets do not tell us, then how will we know? S&M, piercing, drag, dildoes: is any of this really new? Or are we only revisiting Pandora's bountiful box?

From the lascivious satire of Catullus to the obsessions of Michelangelo, the fetishes of Edna St. Vincent Millay to the faunal fantasies of DH Lawrence, the howling of Ginsberg and the beats to the sultry slammers of modern-day San Francisco, poet/photographer Gavin Geoffrey Dillard has collected the most exotic of the erotic of the poetic pantheon, lest any further clues be lost between the cracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good collection if you like poetry Feb 20 2002
If you like poetry and you like anthologies of poetry but wonder where all the good parts are, then this is a collection for you. Arranged by topic or activity addressed in the piece (there are five categories in all), this collection spans 2600 years of human work in the words of 122 individuals. There is some activity or topic for everyone but this means that some may be offended now and again by other pieces. Dillard has done a good job of collecting materials together though some historical background might be interesting too -- but then I'm a historian so that is one of my fetishes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry That Did Not Fall Through The Cracks Jun 3 2000
Here is whopper of a poetry assembled by a tireless poet himself, Gavin Dillard, also known by the title of "the Naked Poet" for going to Poetry Readings and appearing in the buff. This anthology contains many poems that are stripped to the bare essentials like the editor himself. I can say that you can flip open to any page and happen upon quirky original works that will draw you into the world of rich, exotic, verve-y works and it is similar to riding a magic carpet ride. I want to thank Gavin Dillard for his dedicated work in assembling this collection. This book of golden nuggets is NOT for the timid....Caution: .....Mature Works Ahead. I am proud to be represented in this collection and encourage others in this collection to write their ideas in this arena offered by Amazon.Com and of course Readers too, and Book-buyers, who without we would not be here.

5.0 out of 5 stars A poetic tour of the perimeter of sexual desire Feb 20 1998
In the beginning was the Flesh, and the flesh became Word

and Gavin Dillard has collected the word about flesh in a groundbreaking anthology. Spanning from classical Greece to contemporary San Francisco, he takes us on a poetic tour of the perimeter of sexual desire. In doing so, he reveals something of the center.

The collection is of consistent high quality, with poets of the stature of Byron, Lawrence and Whitman alongside some stunning contemporary poets. Dillard's own, with images as sharp and clear as the sting of a whip, are among the collection's best.
