Pretty? Yes. Beautifuls? No.,

Not one of HW's best, but pretty good. "An Enjoyable Listen" is how I would describe it except for Pomegranate Daffodil which uses the F word unecessarily to add shock value or to make a point. I am not sure which.Do not think me a "Prude" or "Old Fashioned", but I think profanity in todays music is very much overused. Pete Townshend in his song "I Am an Animal" used it wisely. (Listen to the song from the album "Empty Glass" and you will hear what I am talking about. A classic with well written lyrics.) Thank goodness for track selection and edit on CD's and I-tunes. I can see myself running to my old record player trying to get there and lift the needle before a certain song starts playing. Sorry MOM! Otherwise this CD is worth picking up. Piano Blink has a nice bounce to it and Prettier Face is a fun cautionary tale about drinking to excess. The whole cd has a nice flow to it with a great mixture of hard rock, pop and ballads.

Since Hawksley came out with A Treeful of Starling, he has changed course and gone for more melodic and woeful songs. Between The Beautifuls is an excellent album, however for those of you who are used to the "old Hawksley" with songs a la Jealous of Your Cigarette and Striptease, be prepared for a totally different facet of this dynamic Canadian singer/songwriter. Songs that stand out in this particular album are Piano Blink (Los Manlicious mix), Oh You Delicate Heart, All The Trees Are Hers, City Is A Drag, and Pomegranate Daffodil. Definitely worth adding to your Hawksley Workman album collection.

The genius that is Hawksley Workman has done it again. Between the Beautifuls is different from his past work, but no less incredible - the brilliant songwriting, instrumentation, and, of course, voice, are all still there. Personal favourites include "All the Trees are Hers", "Alone Here", "No Stillness and No Rain", "Oh You Delicate Heart", Piano Blink" (awesome!), "Prettier Face", "The City is a Drag", and "What Would You Say to Me, Lord?" - yes, pretty much every song on the album. Its hardly left my player since I got it.The album, of course, is nothing compared to seeing him live, but it should tie me over until Hawksley comes back! Thank you for another amazing album!
