From Publishers Weekly

In 1813 Alec Castlemaine, a callous English duke who compares courtship to horse trading, faces rejection from his meticulously selected betrothed, who decides she cannot live without love. That same night, Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie, a Scottish witch with faith in fairy-tale endings, messes up a travel incantation and "zaps" herself into the duke's lap. Unbelievably, she explains away her sudden appearance, and the duke, wanting to salvage his pride, marries her immediately. After she reveals her powers on their wedding night, the duke forbids her to perform any hocus-pocus. Inconveniently, she can't always control her magic. When she sneezes, whatever she thinks appears. There is some self-righteous challenge to traditional representation of race and class. Joy hires a Caribbean cook named Hungan John despite protest from the rest of the household, although he ends up being little more than a happy, singing black man. Joy also helps Alec see that servants are people too. Barnett's ( Just a Kiss Away ) quirky wit is demonstrated when Joy say things like "Can't you shrink it a wee bit?" after they consummate their marriage, giving a twist to an otherwise standard plot.

Book Description

She had bewitched the most serious, snobbish, and handsome Duke in England. Joyous MacQuarrie...the pixie-like, green-eyed beauty had appeared from nowhere and fell unashamedly into his arms. And all that his society friends knew of the mysterious lady was that she was Scottish and that her grandmother had been a Locksley. Even her fine bloodline didn't make Joy quite proper enough to be a Duchess, but a proud nobleman like Alec, Duke of Belmore, did as he pleased...and he wanted to marry the beautiful girl who aroused his desire.

But Alec soon discovered he could not do what he pleased with Joy Fiona MacQuarrie. Bubbling with laughter, filled with spirit, she turned stately Belmore Park upside down with merriment and strange occurrences. She might even have gotten Alec to laugh -- and to cherish her -- if it had not been for the truth she hid. Though he turned to fire when he tasted her petal-soft lips, he turned to ice when he discovered that this winsome lady was, in fact, a witch. A witch whose powers of white magic were not always perfectly under control....Too late, Joy knew she was desperately in love and that nothing could stop the course of their destiny -- the scandal threatening to destroy her and the passion that held them both spellbound in a forbidden, irresistible match of two enchanted hearts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could't Finish It, Mar 12 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bewitching (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a huge fan of paranormal romance, and after seeing the rave reviews, I held off on reading it until I knew that my schedule would allow for a wonderful reading treat. What a dissapointment! The story starts out interesting enough, but goes nowhere. The heroine is entirely too sweet, perky, and naive, and tends to thrive on emotional abuse. The hero (a zero in my book), is an emotionless, cardboard snob that is almost impossible to like or even identify with. The plot is practically non-existant. Believe it or not, I ALMOST finished it before I realized that it was taking me twice as long to read as other books. Since I have a huge collection of more promising books to read, I decided to end my suffering and move on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Enchanting!!!, Mar 7 2004
This review is from: Bewitching (Mass Market Paperback)
Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie is part Scottish and part blue-blooded English, part mortal and part witch, but mostly she's all heart. She takes the time to notice all the ordinary magic of life surrounding her. Her witch's magic, however, has a habit of going astray quite often which leads to some very humorous moments. It also leads her to literally land on Alec Castlemaine, Duke of Belmore, who is humorless, rigid and lives his life by a predictable schedule which doesn't include frivolity of any kind. When these polar opposites meet, it's up to Joy to melt the wall of ice around Alec's heart with her own special magic.

This fairy tale love story is beautifully crafted and full of Ms. Barnett's trademark humor. I absolutely loved the characters of Joy and her wheezing sidekick weasel, Beelzebub.

Once started, this book is difficult to put down. This is the prequel to Dreaming, one of my top 10 favorite romance novels of all time!(which I accidently read first) Dreaming is the story of Letitia & Richard who are introduced in this book.

Jill Barnett is one my favorite authors & I've just about worked my way through everything she has written. All of it is wonderful, but Bewitching is one of her best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet fairy tale., Dec 28 2003
This review is from: Bewitching (Mass Market Paperback)
Joyous Fiona MacQuarrie was a beautiful, Scottish witch with lovely green eyes. A witch who couldn't control her magic no matter how hard she tried, to the despair of her aunt, the MacLean, one of the best witches of all time.

It was one of her spells that went wrong what made her fall into the arms of the handsome Alec, Duke of Belmore.

They got married and she turned Belmore Park upside down with merriment and strange occurrences, but soon the fire turned into ice when the proud nobleman discovered that his wife was a witch.

It's a great book that will make you smile, laugh out loud and cry. The supporting cast is great.

Don't miss "Dreaming", next in the series.
