Book Description

Feb. 1 2001
Panic attacks, phobias, and other problems with anxiety have been effectively treated with cognitive behavioral therapy and medication for many years. Now even more help for these conditions is available. In Beyond Anxiety & Phobia, Dr. Edmund J. Bourne (author of the best-selling Anxiety & Phobia Workbook) offers a full spectrum of complimentary approaches that get to the heart of anxiety and phobia and go beyond standard treatments and medication.

In this book you will find guidelines and strategies that can help you to:

- Reduce anxiety by simplifying your lifestyle and environment.
- Uncover core personality traits and fears that perpetuate anxiety.
- Discover purpose in your life that helps overcome a sense of meaninglessness.
- Embrace spirituality to change both your perspective on your problem and your ability to heal it.
- Create a vision of your recovery that will attract a positive outcome.
- Use alternative methods such as herbs, diet, yoga, massage, and acupuncture for greater relaxation and ease in your life.
- Practice mediation so you can learn to witness rather than simply react to anxiety and fear.

Dr. Bourne has helped many of his clients achieve a more complete and lasting recovery in overcoming difficulties with anxiety by combining these methods with conventional treatment.

This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book! Feb. 21 2001
By A Customer
This book picks up where the author's Anxiety and Phobia Workbook left off. The affirmations in the back alone are worth the price of the book, which presents a wide variety of ideas for living a more peaceful and satisfying life. The author is obviously a highly sensitive and caring therapist with a deep understanding of these problems. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desperate to find real help Sept. 15 2005
By thomas - Published on Amazon.com
My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject. I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped. Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helps learn about yourself and others Jan. 11 2007
By Annushka - Published on Amazon.com
I never look to books to give me the ultimate answer. If I learn something from it and can apply it in some way to my life, and if it's writen well enough to keep me interested, it's worth it. This book was very good that way, at least for someone who likes philosopical/psychological stuff.

I've been diagnosed with a general anxiety disorder, and had a bout of depression last year. A very good therapist recommended this to me. In fact, she said that I HAD TO buy it. I did, and learned a lot about various types and triggers for anxiety. The more I learn about it, the easier for me to deal with it. It became a familiar, known side of me, and when I can separate the rest of me from it and look at it, and study it, it becomes less and less relevant. Which is what we all want, right?

And, it helped me understand other types of psychological issues. I don't suffer from all of those, thankfully, but it is sure interesting to learn how those work. Anyway, it's a good read. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pefect if you don't want to be medicated! Oct. 14 2007
By J. Domingos - Published on Amazon.com
This book was a dream come true for me. I can't take medication for my anxiety and depression. This book helped me find alternatives that set me on the right path. Now I feel a sense of relief and like there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There is also a section on finding your life purpose. It's wonderful and really helped me set a plan into action so I can fill that empty space causing me so much anxiety. I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers with mild or moderate anxiety who needs reassurance and help.
