Product Description

From Amazon

Beyond Crazy takes readers on journeys through mental illness, but also much farther--past the pain and stigma to the hope and reality of recovery ahead. In their previous bestseller, The Last Taboo, journalists Julia Nunes and Scott Simmie chronicled Simmie's own battle with mental illness. In this illuminating collection, well-known athletes, singers, broadcasters, politicians, and performers reveal how mental illness has devastated their own lives and the lives of people they love. In one story, the writers take readers inside the mind of a middle-aged man whose freefall into psychosis renders him paranoid and alone. "The many delusions that plagued Ian were highly intricate and, to him, exceedingly real. When homeless in Calgary in 1980, he believed he had caused the explosion of Mt. St. Helens with his mental powers. (The purpose of bringing about this cataclysm was to take pressure off the tectonic plates--thus preventing San Francisco from falling into the ocean.)"

Many of the tales are truly uplifting: Former tennis prodigy and film star Carling Bassett-Seguso has put a career-ending eating disorder behind her to enjoy life with her three young children. A pioneering doctor in London, Ontario, uses early intervention to keep a determined young woman in university and on track with her life. But the stories also make clear that Canada's doctors, hospitals, and mental-health facilities are letting people down with faulty diagnoses and inadequate treatment. Ultimately, the writers call for more research and greater understanding--for as these stories prove, mental illness is far from insurmountable. --Carolyn Leitch --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

“Gripping.…This book deserves to have the effect on the mental health field that Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle had on the meat-packing industry.…The best thing about Beyond Crazy is that, speaking of mental health, it is compulsively readable.…It is rare to find a book that is so informative and moving.”
–Catherine Gildiner, Globe and Mail

Beyond Crazy goes beyond therories and treatments into the world of human experience. These compelling and personal stories propel the reader into the phenomenon of mental disorder, show how it has transformed the lives of ordinary and celebrated Canadians, and teach us not to lose sight of the person who is suffering. It is a terrific book.”
–David S. Goldbloom, MD, FRCPC, Physician-in-Chief, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

Beyond Crazy is a unique book that lives up to its title. Through powerful stories of Canadians from all walks of life, it demonstrates how it is possible to get past the stigma and the labels and move forward. This book is an important source of inspiration and hope.”
–Canadian Mental Health Association

“Readers will meet close to 40 courageous mental illness survivors who wanted to tell their stories. That they do so with such complete candour makes the book…a powerful message to the health care establishment, lawmakers, the media, and to ordinaty people. The common thread through these extraordinary accounts is that people with mental illnesses want and need to be heard.…The stories cover the gamut of ages, occupations, and backgrounds. Some impress because of the bravery dispalyed.…Others are wrenchingly sad.”
–Saskatoon StarPhoenix

“If you need proof that mental disorders touch every single corner of the country, you’ll find it in Beyond Crazy.”
Chatelaine

I thought this book was both entertaining and informative. Some of the stories were brutally honest, and some were also very uplifting. I learned quite a lot about mental illness by reading this book -- and I'd have to say it's changed the way I view this topic. Some of the stories were very, VERY moving.

This is an outstanding book and tremendously moving. You won't be able to put it down. This should be required reading for all medical students. Some of the life stories are phenomenal and the reader is amazed at the strength and adaptability of the human spirit. As people become more isolated and disconnected in the modern world, mental illness is on the rise. Thank you Scott and Julia for this extremely worthwhile publication.

Provides many stories of people...some famous, many succesful...who have come through mental illness and gotten on with their lives. Some are role models in that they share their paths from success to rock bottom and back again. The book also has a chapter on "what it feels like," enlightening those of us who may have experienced one form of mental illness but don't understand what people with other mental illnesses experience. All-in-all, an interesting, informative, easy-to-read, enjoyable book.
