Book Description

Feb 19 2008
In June, 2004, Colin Angus left Vancouver on his bicycle. Nearly two years later, he rolled back in, looking like a castaway, and having completed the first human-powered circumnavigation of the globe.

Angus cycled, skiied, and rowed a route that took him to Alaska, across the Bering Sea and the Siberian winter, across Europe from Moscow to Portugal, then across the Atlantic to Costa Rica–a 156-day rowing odyssey. From there it was a short 8,300 kilometre ride back to Vancouver. Along the way he burned through 4,000 chocolate bars, 72 inner tubes, 250 kgs of freeze-dried foods, 31 dorado fish (caught from the sea), 2 offshore rowboats, 4 bicycles, 80 kgs of clothing. And he showed the world that if he can travel 43,000 kilometres without polluting the planet, then the rest of us can get off our butts, and clean up our own acts.

“We lay in the rowboat cabin as the seas swelled and the sky boiled like a devil’s cauldron. Slanting yellow sun beams cut between black squalls, and corrugated cirrus clouds interlaced the remaining areas of blue. Huge anvil heads roiled and billowed, like slow-moving atomic explosions. Flashes of lightning illuminated the IMAX screen of the horizon. Such energy and volatility would have been breathtakingly beautiful, if we had been watching from nearly anywhere else, and if it weren’t for the fact that it was all just a prelude to a killer storm.

It was hard to believe that yet another tropical cyclone was heading our way. We had chosen the worst hurricane season in recorded history to make our five-month, 10,000 km unsupported rowboat crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Now, two months into our voyage, it looked very likely our expedition might come to an abrupt end.
Our voyage across the Atlantic was only a part of a much larger expedition: an attempt to complete the first human-powered circumnavigation of the planet. So far we had trekked, skied, cycled, canoed, and rowed non-stop across three continents and were half-way across our second ocean. Now, as I huddled in the dog-house sized cabin with my fiancée waiting for the Hurricane Epsilon to reach us, I cursed myself for ever believing I could achieve such an impossible quest.”

“This rich travelogue, filled with adventure, romance, drama, and humour, is a must-read for any travel enthusiast.” —Coastlines

5.0 out of 5 stars From start to finish, this book is riveting! Mar 30 2007
Format:Hardcover
If I didn't know that this expedition actually happened, I would say that this book has to be fiction. However, having read Colin's previous books, I knew that this was going to be great. Beyond the Horizon is so well written that I felt every emotion, drama and life-threatening experience and at times I couldn't turn the page fast enough. This is more than just a story of an incredible expedition, it shows the amazing ability of the human spirit. At every unexpected challenge, where most people would give up, Colin and Julie's infinite resources of skill, determination and will to succeed, make this a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adventure on the High Seas-Harum Scarum Style Oct 17 2007
By Ian Gordon Malcomson HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
As far a travelogue goes, Angus' latest account of his world adventures has everything the globetrotting imagination would want: the harum-scarum, intrigue, the serendipitous, and the near-death experiences. As a westcoaster, with a well-earned penchant to travel the unorthodox way, Angus sets out with his partner, Tim, and the backroom help of friends, to circumnavigate the globe using only leg propelled technology. Along the way, they encounter all kinds of misadventure and challenge that demand a special kind of tact and resourcefulness to overcome. At certain stretches of the journey, the calamities come fast and furious to the point where the reader, too, is in a constant state of crisis alert. What with falling out with his partner, becoming violently sick, almost being capsized in the Atlantic, and running out of money at key junctures of the expedition, one starts to wonder if anything worse could befall Angus and his girlfriend (who has now stepped into replace the `double-crossing' Tim). In the midst of this high adventure and comedy, Angus finds time to decribe some of the scenery and culture along the way. Notwithstanding a few lay-overs along the way, Angus is still driven to be the first to make it across the Atlantic in a mechanized rowboat. While I stuck with the book to the end because of it reads like a fast-paced, true-life thriller, it still comes off as a cross between the style of a Dirk Pitt high jinx special and a Jules Verne "Around the World in Eighty Days" novel.
