Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

"Something is wrong. Something has shifted and the change was so subtle and so quiet that we hardly noticed it. We pull against each other now." Ave Mari is describing her marriage to miner Jack MacChesney after eight years. During that period they had two children: a daughter, Etta, who is now an energetic preteen, and a son, Joe, who died suddenly of leukemia. Joe's death and the sorrow and pain beneath a tranquil surface is the focus of this tale. When the mine closes, Jack loses his job and Ave suspects that he is involved with another woman. She visits her family in Italy for the summer and finds time to gather her thoughts, to question her behavior as well as Jack's. There she meets the handsome Pete Rutledge, and her own fidelity is tested. Trigiani (Big Stone Gap) reads this story convincingly, with the rural Virginia accent of the friendly and earnest Ave. Well-paced and engaging, this deeply felt story invites the listener to reflect on the nature of love. Simultaneous release with the Random House hardcover (Forecasts, May 14).

From Library Journal

In this sequel to Big Stone Gap (LJ 4/1/00), it's now the late 1980s, and Ave Maria and Jack MacChesney have been married 11 years. They have a ten-year-old daughter, Etta, but lost their younger child, Joe, a few years earlier. This loss and other marital stresses have tested their relationship, but the summer brings on the biggest trial yet. As Jack tries to launch a new construction business in Big Stone Gap, VA, Ave Maria and Etta take off for Italy. While many of the same humorous characters of the first novel reappear here, the tragedy of the death of a child and the chill it can cast on any marriage make this work more somber than its predecessor. Nonetheless, this novel of love and forgiveness delivers its story in a believable manner. Ave Maria remains someone readers would like to know, and Iva Lou, her librarian friend, still has her finger on the pulse of Mars/Venus relationships in this neck of the woods. Recommended for popular fiction collections. Rebecca Sturm Kelm, Northern Kentucky Univ. Lib., Highland Heights

5.0 out of 5 stars Big great book, Mar 9 2005
I like any book that takes me someplace I have never been or could not possibly go. THE LIFE OF PI comes to mind as one of these types of books, as does the riveting and gorgeous CHILDREN'S CORNER by Jackson McCrae. Enter BIG CHERRY. Ave Maria Mulligan returns, this time as the wife of coal miner Jack McChesney and mother of Etta. The supporting cast of personalities in Big Stone Gap are still there, but there are big changes on the horizion. Theodore has left the small town to dazzle the college crowd with his half time spectaculars, leaving Ave marie without her sounding board. When the mine closes and Jack Mack has to look to find something to fill up that big hole in his life, Ave Marie isn't sure that she is still enough. Soon, it seems like every move she makes, no matter how good her intentions, is taken wrong and there is no hope for a happy ending. It is not until she returns to visit her father in Italy, and also is forced to look at some hard truths about herself, that Ave Marie discovers the answers she is looking for. The answers that lie in BIG STONE GAP. Don't' miss it!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar read!, May 9 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Big Cherry Holler: A Novel (Paperback)
While Milk Glass Moon is my favorite, Big Cherry Holler is my second choice. Both are excellent and should not be missed. Big Cherry is a wonderfully drawn portrait of life, and the change of settings in the book is used for maximum effect. This is really a sequal book to Big Stone Gap, and I highly recommend you read that one first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, Mar 22 2004
This review is from: Big Cherry Holler: A Novel (Paperback)
I read this book all in one day. It simply just kept getting better and better. I would have loved a little more of the visit from Italy, because it didn't seem like Pete could "fall in love" with her in that short of time and then to find her just didn't have the backing that I think it should.

Other than that, Milk Glass Moon is on my agenda today and I look forward to it! I wouldn't mind a book 4 either!!!
