Product Description

From Amazon.com

A double-dozen (give or take a few, they don't mind) songs about love, life, and chickens, Big Grapefruit Cleanup Job presents the wacky funsters of Ed's Redeeming Qualities at their best--live, in front of a hometown (well, an adopted hometown) audience. Transplants from the Northeast to San Francisco, the trio--Buckets and Breeders veteran Carrie Bradley, restaurant critic Dan Leone, and children's book author Jonah Winter--specialize in whimsical instrumentation (guitar, a one-string, homemade bass, ukulele, accordion, clarinet, violin) and playful lyrics. Sample: "If all I wanted was in your pants, I would've stole your laundry." Far and away their best album, as their studio recordings never captured the atmosphere of their live show, Grapefruit also features original band member Neno Perrotta. --Randy Silver

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Tunes from Fun People, Sep 11 1999

This CD is fun and light-hearted music from a band that was a true delight to see live. I miss their gigs which always drew a crowd of people to dance, sing along, and laugh. In the years since I bought this CD, it has kept my fiance and I entertained on several cross-country drives and makes me smile whenever I slide it into my stereo. My favorites are "The Princess and the Horseman of the Apocalpse...(aka "the Unicorn Song"), "New Jersey", "I Met a Man", "Green Glass", "Driving on 9", "Swiss Chard", and "Calypso on the Beach". I even bought a tee-shirt at one of the gigs with the cover art and lyrics to all the songs... (sniff!) I miss Ed's :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to transcend the mundane..., July 1 1999

Transcending the mundane with its own devices.. I can think of no better way to describe the music of Ed's Redeeming Qualities. A quaint mix of folk, blues, alternative, with a dash of country, Ed's eschews the "standards" of these genres by REFUSING to embrace an over-reliance on percussion. It's impossible to describe how wonderful it is to hear Carrie's breathy expositions without some drug-crazed, slack-jawed wacko banging away arythmically on a snare in the background. Though one might find their music merely light-hearted, the jovial demeanor is really a veneer; what lies below is the stuff that we all struggle with in some form or another; death, love, ambition, finding beauty in ordinary flies in a blue light. For me, this is not party music; this music is for quiet introspection in a dark room with an alcoholic beverage in my hand, contemplating insecurities, failures, and hope for the future.
