As far as their musical changes are concerned, the most immediate difference on ll is that frontman Ben Kowalewicz sings considerably more melodically than ever before. The CD's first single, "Devil in a Midnight Mass"--a lyrically deft, desperate number about one child's sexual abuse by a Priest--comes to a spine-chilling conclusion, further heightened by Kowalewicz's screams. Three more songs pass, however, before the singer once again lets out his trademark outcry, effectively reinforcing "Worker Bees'" anti-war lyrics. On the instrumental front, guitarist Ian D'Sa continues his metal-infused guitar riffs, though the band's mellower songs ("Surrender," "Pins and Needles") could easily sneak onto pop radio.
Longtime fans will find plenty of familiar elements; producer Gavin Brown has returned, once again focusing on Billy Talent's heavily-staccato'd style, but amping it up significantly, especially on standout tracks "Sympathy" and "Covered in Cowardice." All in all, ll is a great showcase of their thrash-meets-melody style, guaranteeing to not disappoint their devoted fan base. --Denise Sheppard

Billy Talent(ed),

I never really got into Billy Talent until I heard "River Below" from the first album...songs like that and the follow-up single, "Nothing To Lose" spoke to me...I went out, bought the album, and was blown away!My immediate reaction to this album was exactly the same...there is a difference...with the first album you could pick out other potential singles. With this album, you can't because every song is "single-worthy", making this album a five-star album, and a must own for any fan of music.

Summer favorite?,

The precedent album took me by suprise. It was like a wave of energy crashing in my face! Now this album is less of a suprise, we know who Billy Talent are and what the deal is. Still, even if its less suprising, I find that the new album is the kind of album that grows on you and that gets better with every listen. I'm sure that by next week this album will be among my summer favorites.

This Canadian group will impress you again with this new album. Great lyrics, great beats, this CD will make you crank up the volume. A bit less original as the first one, but good continuity! Excellent!
