Binky, a charming and chunky black-and-white house cat, isn’t your average feline. He’s a space cat, a card-carrying member of F.U.R.S.T (Felines of the Universe Ready for Space Travel). Binky is also the self-appointed protector of his household. When Binky’s beloved owners, “one big human” (a woman) and “one small human” (a boy), leave Binky at home alone, the cosmic kitty gets busy. If he isn’t preoccupied with the day to day rhythms of cat existence (e.g., raiding his bag of kibble), he’s fending off the pesky aliens who have descended upon his otherwise peaceful home. In truth, these aliens are bugs, common house flies often pictured buzzing around Binky, his food bowl, his litter box, or worse, the heads of his human owners. He makes a plan to fight the aliens on their own turf, but in the end decides that outer space – which in Binky’s mind is the space outside a house – is a dangerous place for an indoor cat, so he stays put. Ashley Spires’ tale is full of humour. The artwork, rendered in ink and watercolour, mostly consists of neutral colours that are nicely balanced by the animated and expressive features of Binky and his owners. Binky the Space Cat is the first in a new graphic novel series that aims to introduce a younger audience to the genre. The tone of the prose and the visuals probably skews a little younger than its intended audience – many 10-year-olds are already eye-deep in manga – but all the same, Binky’s misadventures are a delight.

With plenty of visual gags and a cute hero, this book is perfect for kids who are transitioning from easy readers to early chapter books, while the dry humor will also keep stronger readers engaged.

My 9 and 4 year old sons and I LOVED this book. We spent the entire book laughing outloud. It is a great "graphic Novel" with the print being large enough for the parents with poor eyesight to be able to read it to their kids!! We give this book 5 stars!!!

Lots of fun for Young and Old,

Binky came to live with his humans as a kitten. He is all grown up and he loves his humans. He has discovered many things about the world with the most important being aliens. Humans call them bugs but cats know better. He decides to leave his space station (house) so he can spend his life saving the universe from aliens but first he must build a rocket. While building his rocket he also spends his time saving his own humans from the aliens but when the rocket is finished he finds he has left something very important behind. This is a truly adorable book! I enjoyed every single frame of it. The story has an amazingly full plot for such a short number of pages. Binky will capture the heart of the intended audience right away. I also hazard a guess that Binky would be enjoyed by cat lovers of any age. The book is very funny, I caught myself giggling out loud more than once. The humour comes out in the illustrations which one wants to linger over as they are full of detail. The author's graphic style of drawing the characters: Binky and the humans (a single mom and her son) are unique and very eye catching. The whole book is done in shades of grey, with faint browns and blues and eye catching pops of red here and there. Gorgeous to look at. A great, fun read that kids are going to love. Recommended!

We can't wait for Binky's second adventure! This kept my 10 year old daughter, eight year old son and me spellbound for the short duration it took to read it. The illustrations were wonderful and the story was captivating.

I love this book, my just six year old loves it and my husband loves it. Binky is laugh out loud funny as he protects his humans from the not-so-scary alien invasion. My son reads a bit above his age level and I've had a hard time finding graphic novels that are both age appropriate and that fit his reading level. I hope that we see more of Binky.

This one is a laugh a page. Never mind that we are a cat family and just know some of our kitties think and act like Binky, this book will charm you and give little ones big giggles with Binky's shenanigans, all perfectly targeted for ages 6-10. This graphic novel format is a great way to encourage reading. And beneath all of this wonderful, engaging and fun adventure is the maxim: there's no place like home and family!
