Lego's Bionicle line has sprouted this complicated but impressive family movie, Bionicle: Mask of Light, to bolster the toys' mythic appeal. The story focuses on the robotic Matoran tribe from the island of Mata Nui, which is protected by six powerful guardians known as the Toa. Two small Matorans--one a potentially heroic "herald" and the other a historian-witness called "chronicler"--find a sacred mask of light, suggesting the imminent of arrival of a seventh Toa. Identifying that mystery figure proves difficult, however, especially with the evil spirit of shadows, Makuta, attacking Matorans with mechanized-crayfish warriors in a bid to possess the precious mask. This is the kind of out-of-nowhere, dense fantasy that requires one to get up to speed quickly on a lot of exotic detail, terms, history, etc. But Mask of Light is also enjoyable as expressive, CGI animation with thoughtful art design, striking color, and excellent vocal performances. --Tom Keogh

i guess i didn't mind this movie.i mean,it is enjoyable and the
animation is well done.the story is simple, yet muddled at times,if that
makes any sense.there are a lot of different characters in this one,and
it's kind of hard to keep track,at times.there is lots of action and
adventure.i found the ending anti-climatic.this is the first of three
movies in the "Bionicle series",and though i haven't seen the 2nd and
3rd yet,i suspect this one is a stand alone adventure.anyway,it's an
entertaining 3D animated movie,though i wouldn't call it stellar,by any
means.it's pretty fast paced, but short in its running time(less than 80
minutes.nevertheless,i think there are many more positives than
negatives.i'm giving "Bionicle: Mask of light" a 3.5/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie Aug 15 2007
Format:DVD
As a new comer to the Bionicle world, I had no idea what to expect. It was a pretty good movie. More suited to kids, but the story was great. The settings were lush jungle, to the frozen tundra. All had great color and excellent animation. I hope that future movies have the Titans in them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let the story beggin May 7 2004

This movie is really good, and the music is good too. The movie starts were book 4: Tales of the Masks (Bionicle Chronicles) ended. To understand this movie you would have to read all of the Bionicle Books (But, only the Chronicles books first, then you can go to the Adventures series). As you read the books you find info that the movie did not tell.
Now with Bionicle 2 Legends of Metru Nui (On DVD and Video, Fall 2004) and Bionicle 3 (In Theaters 2005) in the works, The Bionicle story is just beginning.
