Product Description

Album Description

What I always wanted to do was to reconnect musicology with nature," Icelandic composer and performer Bj"rk recently told the New York Times. "I always wanted to make bass lines behave like gravity."Biophilia is the Icelandic singer and composer's most ambitious undertaking in a 20-year career distinguished by continuous innovation and artistic evolution. The album title refers to a love of all living things, and in every aspect of this game-changing multi-media effort, Bj"rk brilliantly connects nature, music, and technology. In addition to the music itself, this project will offer interactive iPad apps, designed by the industry's most creative minds, that feature games, music, and editorial content-allowing listeners to explore more deeply the concepts and sounds of each of Biophilia's 13 songs. The artistic and technological reach of Biophilia is nothing short of visionary. As New York Times critic Jon Pareles has put it, "Biophilia is a possible paradigm for the 21st-century album, one that welcomes the interactivity of the Internet and harnesses the power and flexibility of devices that incorporate video, audio and user control far beyond the play button." Media artist and chief Biophilia apps designer Scott Snibbe, enthuses, "To me, it feels like the birth of opera or the birth of cinema."At the core of this groundbreaking project, of course, are Bj"rk's sonically brilliant and emotionally stirring new songs, akin to the magical, otherworldly, atavistic hymns of her acclaimed 2001 disc, Vespertine. On Vespertine, Bj"rk rhapsodized about a new romance; here, she attempts nothing less than to retell the story of the creation of the universe in her own compellingly idiosyncratic voice.

This review is from: Biophilia (Audio CD)
Bjork's latest project involves a suite of apps, multimedia performances and other ventures that you can read about (and participate in) elsewhere on the Internet. Here i'm only reviewing the 13-track, 63-minute CD which is one spinoff from the project, and my title refers mainly to the lyrics of the 9 songs which are in English. One of them features three or four stories of how "the world we know" originated. Another introduces us to the "internal nebula". Then there's a heartfelt love song expressed in terms of the intimate relation between a virus and the cell it longs to invade. Another begins "I shuffle around/ the tectonic plates in my chest". Every song pushes the envelope of imagination in the unique Bjorkian fashion, and in my opinion pushes it further than any of her previous records. Let it all sink in, and you'll begin to feel "universal intimacy" with everything from the galactic to the microscopic.

Musically, the highlight here is the singing, and especially Bjork's arrangments for the Icelandic choir who accompany her on most of the songs, venturing into the harmonic stratosphere and beyond. The rest of the accompaniment is mostly electronic, except for a few harps, and quite minimalist. Bjork continues to move ever further from pop hooks, and even from the sound of musicians recorded playing instruments. I've heard that some of the songs were composed on a tablet computer, and actually this CD sounds as if it were recorded on one, sounding a bit muffled and distorted, as if it were a transmission from one of the outer planets rather than a recording of live singing and playing on earth. It's hard to tell whether this is intentional or not on Bjork's part, and i would have to say that the sheer sound is the weakest aspect of this CD. But the singing, and above all the songwriting, is so strong that it only gets better with every listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonne qualité, Feb 5 2012
Ce vinyle de 180 grammes est d'une qualité assez surprenante. La belle pochette ajoute également une certaine valeur à cet album qui saura vous transporter dans l'univers de Björk. Très recommandé pour les adeptes de vinyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great purchase, Nov 11 2011
This review is from: Biophilia (Audio CD)
The newest Bjork's album Biophilia is just great. She's more calm now, less rage than in Volta but keeps her vigurous voice and personality. Best songs are Mutual Core, Crystaline and Sacrifice...and purchase in Amazon.ca very good, got my CD before I expected. I'm very happy with it.
