“Magical and ethereal do not typically describe tales of bullying, but this lyrical combination of realism and fantasy defies expectation. … This is a beautiful book with a somber tone, buoyed by Eliza and Lainey’s triumph in imagining possibilities. They do not fight the bully, but defy him by becoming friends.”
— School Library Journal
“… As a thematic book dealing with the issue of bullying, this story excels. It is not preachy or didactic.... Word choices approach the finely tuned standard of poetry…. Highly recommended.”
— Excellent, Resource Links
“Forler’s first published work is lyrically written and conveys an astute awareness of children and bullying. Thisdale’s eerie images … are perfectly suited to the text’s magic realism and are sure to draw young readers into the story. A thoughtful choice for one-on-one sharing…”
— Booklist
“François Thisdale’s illustrations are feast of pure visual delight…. Bird Child stirs the soul, is a joy to experience, and presents a bold hopeful ray of light to children experiencing bullying.”
— Highly Recommended, CM Magazine

Powerful Literature,
This review is from: Bird Child (Hardcover)
Bird Child: so much beautiful writing and visually, it is absolutely gorgeous. This book should have a special place on the shelf in every school library and should be read and discussed with students again and again. There are not enough picture books that so thoughtfully explore the active role of the bystander in changing the way a bully might act and the way a peer is treated. In my primary classroom this book had big impact. Read more here: [...]

Review from Books That Heal Kids,
By Books That Heal Kids "Roxanne" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Bird Child (Hardcover)
This book does such a wonderful job of tackling the issue of bystanders in a bully situation. It's beautifully written and the students were a bit mesmerized by the creative but warm illustrations. I'm predicting you will be hearing more and more about Bird Song as it's popularity will certainly rise among school counselors, teachers, and parents. As an elementary school counselor, I have immediately built it into my curriculum. There are kids at my school who needed the boost from Nan Forler's book giving them permission to say no to unkind behavior. In the story, Eliza's mom wisely says, "Look down and see what is. Now look up and see what can be." I took the time to make sure the kids understood those words - You have the power to change a situation, a life, a bully problem! This is the first year I've spent more time focusing on the bystanders at my school. It's been time well spent. I'm seeing more empathy, invites to play, faster action to bully behavior, and less exclusion. Don't pass this one up. We are all facing the same issues at our schools, I can see this book being appreciated by students everywhere. |
