From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4?West presents five party themes and menus: Alien Adventure, By the Sea, Pizza Party, A Purrfect Pet Party, and Starry, Starry Night. Each theme suggestion opens with a double-page, full-color photograph that shows the decorations and generally low-fat, low-sugar foods; readers must refer back to this spread to compare their efforts with the finished products. While the ideas presented hold the most appeal for younger children, the recipes require middle graders with previous cooking experience to create them with minimal supervision. The recipes are quick and fairly simple, with clearly written directions. The "Cosmic Candy Cup," which involves two plastic cups decorated and put together rim to rim, is a bit of a challenge, but not impossible. A brief history of the tradition of birthdays is included as are the directions for the card game, "Go Fish." Children will enjoy creating their own party, and this book gives them the tools to do so easily and attractively, with a little help from Mom or Dad.?Carole B.
