Phenomenal Electro, Jan 5 2010

Smash TV was, at the time of this album, on the forefront of that electro/techno realm typified by Ellen Allien, and in fact, he produced her landmark album, "Berlinette." Bits for Breakfast still sounds fresh, even if Smash TV's style has changed over the last few years. As far as this style of electro is concerned, I think Holger Zilske (the man behind Smash TV) did it as good as anyone. The tracks are intricate symphonies of buzzing synths, lo-fi drums, 8-bit samples, and excellent beats.
My favorite aspect of "Bits for Breakfast" is the extraordinary sounds that Smash TV chooses. They are so perfect for the music, at once unexpected and familiar. There are sounds that take me back to my old video game days juxtaposed expertly with crisp beats and contemporary synthesis techniques. On the few occasions where Smash TV employs a vocalist, in this case Raz Ohara, the results are solid. "Queen of Men" is a perfect synthesis of vocals and electronics where neither one feels dominated by the other - in short, total harmony.
If you're a fan of Ellen Allien or just about anything on her BPtich Control label, you absolutely must have this album.

Good modern Electro, May 11 2005

Bits for Breakfast should appeal to fans of Ellen Allien's Berlinette. Smash TV member Holger Zilske produced Berlinette. It's not a perfect album, but it's a solid example of modern electro that's not content to settle for being ironic.
