--Ambroisie

This review is from: Bk1/2 Musiche Varie A Voce Sol (Audio CD)
I was so lucky to secure a copy of this absolute jewel in early music by one of the most expressive and accomplished countertenors ever.(And I do have CD's of about 50 different cts.) Philippe Jaroussky's voice soars with incredible melismas, changes in tempos, pianissimos, his coloratura is flexible and it provides an insight to Ferrari's music. He wrote 3 books on Musiche Variae a voce sola, the first one influenced by the new declamatory style with use of the arioso rather than arias; the second and third are closer to the style of opera, and Ferrari even wrote most of the texts himself. The third book has more vibrant tempos, as in "Lingua di donna" and the wonderful "Amanti, io viso dire", a chaconne where the use of the basso ostinato giving the musicians more opportunity for exploring new harmonies; Philippe's voice plays around the instruments of his accomplished group Artaserse , with long phrases and syncopations freely weaving over long lines of melody. At the time of this recording Jaroussky was about 24 years old, amazing in his virtuosity. Today at 32 his voice has acquired depth and maturity but keeps its suppleness and purity of tone. If you come across a copy realize you are lucky. This is a CD to save like a treasure for all aficionados of early music. Or of incredible countertenors.
