Review

The Black Cauldron is an unusual film from Disney that was supposed to mark a new era for its animation division. Instead, it failed at the box office and Disney would not recover until The Little Mermaid in 1989. A departure from the company's usual tendency to cheer up mythical stories, The Black Cauldron is an appropriately dark adventure-fantasy that benefits from the absence of any superfluous songs. Produced with a cruder animation style during the studio's rocky times in the late '70s and early '80s (starting with The Aristocats), it still looks excellent, filmed in 70mm and employing some computer animation enhancement. The story was based on two books from Lloyd Alexander's children's novel series The Chronicles of Prydain. Providing a predictable tale, it bears similarities to the Star Wars saga as well as a Raiders of the Lost Ark-style ending. Perhaps due to the PG rating, surreal settings, and evil characters, The Black Cauldron was a huge commercial flop upon its theatrical release, but it remains notable as an uncommonly risky Disney animated feature. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

1.0étoiles sur 5 There is a reason why Disney never mentions this movie..., Déc 14 2007
Par Aluria (British Columbia, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
I came across this movie one day and was surprised I had never heard of it. There's a reason for that. The so called princess of the movie, who we're not even sure if she's a princess since we only have her word is irritating at best.

The main 'hero', is a pig boy, in charge of a magical pig which he loses because he was too busy daydreaming never really does a whole lot during the movie. Yes he has a magical sword. Guess how he got that sword. He STOLE it from a crypt of a dead king. The movie is about him running off to save the magical pig which seems almost out of fear for what the wizard would do to him if he returned without the pig.

The last of the main cast, the bard is an unusual character who served little purpose except to confuse the audience by his harp that breaks a string whenever the bard tells a lie even though neither the harp or the bard have magic.

Think twice before you buy or even watch this film. And even if you do, don't expect quality like that of most Disney films.

5.0étoiles sur 5 An AWESOME! Disney Fantasy, Nov. 24 2007

This review is from: Black Cauldron (VHS Tape)
I disagree that is this film is in the Top Worst 5's,and I was shocked and surprised by the negative reviews; I thought this film was AWESOME!and I have also read the "Chronicles of Prydain" book series too (from which this film is based on; which was book #2 with the same title).

I love Princess Eilonwy, she is beautiful and cute as button and a brave little lady, and her kiss with Taran at the end knocked me for a loop (*sigh* you know, she and Taran do make a cute couple in my books),and I also love Gurgi, he is SO cute (and talks funny too); so this film film is an Awesome Disney Fantasy.

Be aware that this movie is really not for young kids. I saw it as a child and still exactly remember the nightmares I had for months. It may be a cartoon, but it is scary!
