Read it from front to back. I'm going to build a deck this summer and wanted to learn all about it and figure out how to do it on the cheap but still be nice and have unquie features. This book helped me do all those things.
I will note however that I ordered this from the vender "Why Pay More and Fast Shipping" and they gave me the 4th edition instead of the 5th...and it had rips in the covers, so watch out for them.

I'm a semi-handi man and was contemplating building backyard deck on a fairly good gradient (10-13 feet above grade). I also wanted to know how far I could push the design to maximize the clear span beneath the deck. This book helped me quickly determine the art of the possible and more importantly to know that I was in over my head. In the end... It has helped me to speak and ask educated questions and to get the deck I really want. Worth every cent!

If your looking for a book that gives a lot of general knowledge about decks because your thinking about hiring someone to build it for you than I would recommned this book, BUT if your looking for a book to help you build a deck than I would not recommend this book. The instructions are basic and very vague as are the plans.
