Stud Sensor.

From the Manufacturer

Black & Decker Stud Sensor takes the guesswork out of locating wood studs to hang pictures, install closet shelving, run chair railing and more. Whether you are a pro, do-it-yourselfer or decorator, this Stud Sensor will help you get the job done faster and easier. Stud Sensors detect studs through walls by sensing the differences in wall density between studs and the hollow spaces in your walls. This Stud Sensor has both audible and visual indicators that show when the edge of a stud is located. It is always best to hang shelves, photographs, artwork and other items securely into the studs in your walls. If these items are secured only in the drywall, nails and anchors can come loose under their own weight over time. With the diameter of a stud being less than 1-inch thick and studs being placed either every 16 inches or 24 inches, depending on the construction of your home, it isn't always easy to guesstimate a stud's location. Without a stud sensor you can only guess where studs may be hidden under your walls. This usually results in driving a nail or anchor between the studs in the empty spaces in your walls, leaving holes.

It will light up and make noise, but with no consistency at all. It will "find one edge of the stud and then fail to beep within a foot of the previous marking when scanned from the other direction. It also won't beep in the same place twice in a row. I have tried multiple walls at multiple heights and have tried three sets of batteries. I have even used around places where I know there are studs near power outlets, door frames, etc.

The device is easy to use but I wouldn't say it's accurate. I would suggest having a long thin nail to poke around before committing to drilling. Even after reading the instructions and doing the calibration, it only gave me the general location of the stud. It doesn't do so well when the drywall isn't at its best condition--leaving you with a wide area to find the middle of. It's best to throw in a few knocks and feel for the stud while using it. That or spend more to obtain a better stud finder. I wouldn't recommend this product to a friend nor would I buy it again. It did get the job done but it wouldn't be the only thing I could rely on.

Just say no to this. It ends up not working consistently at all. Beeps, but for no apparent reason. Ended up with more holes in my walls than this found studs.

This stud finder sure takes all the guess work out of finding studs..No more tapping on the walls listening for a "solid" sound..

You can feel how cheap this thing is just by holding it, but it's a stud finder so it's not like you're going to be physically exerting it. Has worked for me, even though the material that touches the wall gives me a nails-on-the-chalkboard kinds of feeling when rubbing it on the wall.

Bought this in order to install a LCD Wall mount properly, did the job just fine, found my studs with no troubles. Came ready to go, with batteries.

I have somewhat thin walls, I saw people complaining about it not finding studs.

Stud find was easy to use once you give it some time to calibrate and get ready before scanning for the stud edges. I know some user might find it confusing if they didn't fully read the instructions.

None of these stud finders seems to be 100%. worked ok, but being aware of what is behind the wall to some extent, helps, to avoid other higher density items in the wall, such as pipes or wires.
