Old gives way to new,

Or so I'd hoped. I've got mixed feelings about this disc. Going in, I had no reservations about Staley being gone, despite having been an AIC fan since the very beginning; his statements in his last few years alive made it clear he didn't want to be there anyway. And good news is, you'll forget all about him pretty much immediately when you listen to this disc. I got to track 3 before I even became consciously aware that there was a new lead vocalist. You really get to see(hear) just how dominant Jerry Cantrell was, and how Staley was getting way too much credit for Cantrell's vocal work all along.That being said, the album kind of drones along, never getting too fast or too slow, too heavy or too mellow, just treading water in the same comfortable groove. It's good, but not great. There just aren't really any standout moments to make it take the next step, or grab my attention. And there definitely aren't enough guitar solos. Like I said, it's a good album, but don't get your hopes up too high before listening. If your expectations are too high, you'll be disappointed. If you just want a decent album, then this'll do fine.

Back From the Dead?,

I waited with anticpation for this cd. I had hoped that the loss of one of their own would strengthen their drive. The album is mixed. Somewhat dark, good rock but uneven. I guess I expected a better result. I think this is a good album just not great. I sense another change will happen before this band is back to it's old self. Interested touch having Elton guest appear.

Writing a review for the new Alice In Chains is a futile thing. There have been few albums in rock as immersed in emotion as much as Black Gives Way To Blue. How do you review something like this?Well, I'll start by telling you a couple thing you wanted to know. Yes, it sounds like Alice, and yes, William and Jerry's vocals are uncannily like Layne and Jerry's. They create the same blend. William is not Layne, and I really don't think he's trying to be. He and Jerry have a history that goes back to Cantrell's solo tours and they sing that way together naturally. That's what I think. The songs are really, really strong. Maybe not up to a Dirt level, but probably somewhere between Dirt and self-titled. They are not as heavy as Dirt, or as angry. The lyrics are softened a bit. These are older, wiser men. My personal favourite songs: "Your Decision" -- an acoustic one that could easily have been on Sap. It's good to know Alice can still write songs as good as this one. I do prefer the download-only acoustic version. It just breathes more. "Black Gives Way To Blue" -- unforgettable. This is the one with Elton John, the tribute to Layne. All I can say is that it is an apt tribute. "Check My Brain" -- a simple, rocky single. A bit simpler than we're used to from Alice. Good song though. I would say the album in general is a bit more simple, a lot less challenging to previous Chains albums. I mean, think back to the first time you heard the songs "Nothing Song" or "Hate To Feel". Those songs are just so odd, the melodies so weird and off the wall, that they really turn your brains inside out. I guess that was all Layne, and now he's gone. A lot of fans are taking issue with the fact that Alice are even daring to continue without Layne. I won't argue with them, because they have a point. I personally like this album, and I think it's a worthy continuation of Alice. It's not the same Alice, and sadly, it never will be again, but it's still better than 97% of the rock albums that major labels are pushing on us in 2009. Fight the corporate rock, and buy something real. Buy Black Gives Way To Blue, and hear some real emotions. Four stars.
