Product Description

While glossy multinational coffee companies dominate our shopping malls and supermarkets, coffee farmers on the other side of the world are being paid so little that many have been forced to abandon their farms. In an attempt to save 75,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy, Tadesse Meskela searches for buyers willing to pay a fair price--and inadvertently begins to unravel a tangled web of greed and double-dealing that infiltrates the international trading system at every level, right on through to the World Trade Organisation.

"Wake up and smell the coffee with this probe into the global grind behind your indulgent latte...as bracing as a double espresso." -- Geoff Pevere, TORONTO STAR

4.0 out of 5 stars a must-see April 27 2007
By millie
Format:DVD
Sorry for the cliche, but it really is something everyone must see. Every dollar you spend is a vote for what you believe in. In North America we really need to be more conscious of where our products come from and how our purchasing patterns affect people around the world who supply us our goods. Coffee's current popularity and it's outrageous price make this film painfully relevant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shameful Injustice - WHY??? Jan 24 2008
Format:DVD
The movie Black Gold is absolutely descriptive and informative. We all have a sense of the injustices that permeates throughout the social and economic relationship of the developed world with the underdeveloped world. We do not know the particulars but we know its there. This movie really brings it to light. There will come a time in the history of man when these kinds of senseless, inhumane, selfish relationships, which are brought out in the movie, will all be considered hedonistic and uncivilized.

Use it in my classroom to help explore the commodity market and the social consequences of simply financial decisions.
