Slimy Rats and Strategic Tooth Loss, Aug 20 2006

This review is from: Black Hearts #3: Tainted Blood (Mass Market Paperback)
My chief reactions after finishing Tainted Blood were "Woooooo!" and "What happens next?" which are pretty much some of the best things I can say about a book. If what happens next (and there better be a "next") is anything like what has just happened, there will definitely be lots of gore, witty banter, and some of the most disgusting bad guys I've ever encountered.
Witty banter notwithstanding, Long novels are all about the action. If I hadn't just seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe so many death-or-glory fight scenes, sudden plot twists, and rapid allegiance shifts could occur in just 253 trade paperback pages. More happens in Tainted Blood than in George R.R. Martin's last four novels combined.
It's like a good high-body-count Schwartzenegger movie -- except that our man Reiner doesn't become immune to arrows and sword thrusts when he loses his shirt. Not to mention the rest of his trusty crew, who litter the (many) battle grounds behind them with plenty of fingers, pieces of ears, and teeth. Except for girl archer Franka, of course. Long knows his audience. Gaming guys don't go for girls with gaps in their grins. Or ugly scars on their decolletage, for that matter.
Do Franka and Reiner finally connect? I'm not saying. In fact, I'm still not sure. I really want to know what happens next.
