The book starts with the story of King's grandmother, Lizzie, who was removed from her family and placed in a Salvation Army home for Aboriginal Children. Later, she was forced to give up her three eldest children, which included King's mother, Mary. King, one of 14 children, grew up in Ipswich. Determined to escape, he took a job with the Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra, and thereafter travelled extensively.
