Still a Classic,
By Darko Odic (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Forgotten Realms Baldurs Gate (CD-ROM)
Baldur's Gate is the RPG game from the late 90s that brought Dungeons and Dragons back to the video-game market. Complex, gritty and intensly difficult, this is not a game you can just pick-up and run with, but rather one that needs to be studied, tried and tested over and over again.Large environments, deep storyline, many subquests and complete freedom to roam is a long-awaited blessing for true D&D fans, but those who are just looking for some hack n' slash (ie Diablo) should look elsewhere. For those of us who love RPGs for their complexity and difficulty - look no further - and make sure you check out the rest of the Black Isle line-up that includes Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale.

Though Baldur's Gate 1 and its expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast (BG:TotSC) may be a bit of a "dinosaur", anyone who still has this game (or the opportunity to purchase it!) should admire this AD&D RPG for its size, storyline, re-playability and overall complexity.Though BG and particularly its add-on TotSC were plagued by glitches and bugs, numerous patches and fixes are thankfully still available online. Also, were it not for numerous websites and forums that provided walkthroughs, maps, item coordinates and other useful information, many critical elements or items might have been missed, rendering the game nearly unsolvable. For those of you that played and enjoyed BG 2 without playing its prequel, several manufacturer and player made mods are available allowing you to re-play BG 1 with the BG 2 engine. All in all, though BG 1 and its expansion TotSC is a well-crafted and immersive RPG, it is important to understand that a certain amount of patience and commitment is required for this game that must be approached with strategy and skill.

Good (for the first 30 mins),

Okay so a couple year ago I bought this game hearing all the rave about it I thought I would be in for loads of fun. I was wrong I only got to the mines (one of the first levels) and kept dying. This game has a good story and characters but it takes forever to grow a level (get stronger) and the levels are close to impossible. If you want a real RPG get Diablo 2 it has great multiplayer and loads of fun. Or for those of you that cant play M rated games you should get Final Fantasy 7. Peace out and I hope that I just saved you the grief of buying this extremely boring game.
