The Black Stallion is a really adventurous book. It's about a boy named Alec Ramsay, who is returning to his home in New York City. He had spent two months in India with his Uncle Ralph. He was traveling by boat on the DRAKE, when one day they stopped at a small Arabian port. Suddenly Alec hears a shrill, loud, and clear whistle and saw a pitch black stallion rear high in the air. The stallion was completely black, except for a white streak across his eyes. For Alec, it was love at first sight. He later named him The Black. With a great struggle, the Black is loaded on to the ship and shoved in a small stall. Alec would regularly come over to the Black's stall and place a cube of sugar on the windowsill. One night, a huge storm swept across the boat. Lighting struck the boat, and Alec knew that the boat was sinking. Without thinking, Alec raced to the Black's stall, threw open the gate, and the stallion bolted out. Alec, thinking quickly, tied the rope that was around the Black's neck to his life jacket and he was fiercely pulled over the side of the DRAKE. As the stallion pulled Alec through the crashing waves, Alec saw the DRAKE explode and everyone drown. Treading and swimming for days, the two finally found land. Alec and Black try to survive on an island by eating fish and edible moss. Over the weeks Alec and the unbroken stallion formed a bond and Alec tried to ride the stallion numerous times. Sometimes he wasn't very successful. One night, Alec's shelter caught fire and burned to the ground. Fortunately, an Irish boat happened to be passing by and saw the fire and rescued the two from the island. Alec and the Black were taken to another port and took another boat to New York City. Alec was very happy to be home. As the ship arrived in New York, the Black was more agitated then ever, but when he was brought to his new home the Black made friends with the old work horse, Napoleon. Alec's neighbor, Henry Dailey, studied the stallion and how fast he ran. He decided to partner up with Alec and try to train the unbroken steed and race him on the track. The only problem was that the Black had to be a thoroughbred to run in a race. Henry sends dozens of letters to the Arabian embassy to find this information while Alec and Henry train the Black. They trained for months until Henry received a letter about the Black. The first sentence was all they needed to read. "There is no horse registered to fit the description you have sent us. We made an extensive search . . ." Both were very disappointed; Alec most of all. However, some very interesting news came up about the fastest horses in the United States, Sun Raider and Cyclone. Many argued about which horse was faster than the other. The owners of Cyclone and Sun Raider finally decided to race their horses in a one-on-one match. Alec bet that the Black could beat them both. Just then Henry had an idea. He asked the reporter, who wrote the article about the match, to come see the Black run. When the reporter came, they took the Black over to the track and ran him. Once the reporter saw the Black run, he was astonished and spellbound. Henry then asked if he could get him in the race with Sun Raider and Cyclone. Amazingly, the reporter manages to get him in. Of course, everyone was astounded that someone was crazy enough to think that their horse could beat Cyclone and Sun Raider. But even so, they still wanted to know who the mystery horse was. On the day of the big race, Alec mounted the Black and they entered onto the track. Everyone was silent until someone announced the mystery horse, and then there was murmuring. The Black was suddenly kicked in the leg by one of the other horses and that hurt the stallion greatly. Although Alec decided not to race the Black in his condition, as soon as the race began, the Black bolted out into the race. Even though Cyclone and Sunrider were pushed at their hardest, and the Black was injured, he managed to beat them! A roar came up from the crowd as Alec and The Black passed the finish line. The award for the fastest horse in the United States was awarded to Alec and the Black stallion.
