Product Description

Album Description

The fourth album from the successful London indie band, the follow-up to 2007's Beyond The Neighbourhood and their debut for the Fiction label. A poppier, more immediate album than anything they have ever done before, Black Swan comes from a desire for "getting the songs across as much as we could" and the band seem to have succeeded. A distinct '80s influence is also prevalent, with a heavy use of synths. Includes the single 'Superhuman Touch'. Polydor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite album of 2009, Sep 20 2010
By T. G. Fish "sane.alex" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Black Swan (Audio CD)
I heard half of this album in summer 2009 before it was released at a small gig, and I thought the new songs sounded great. When the album came out, I wasn't disappointed, this is a terrific album of great performances and songwriting.

The single Black Swan Song is a great piece of songwriting which should have been a major hit, as should Superhuman Touch, which is commercial and way better than Coldplay.

I am going to see the band again in November and taking a carload of teenagers with me; everyone who hears Athlete loves them, so why aren't they at the top of the charts?

If you can still find it, buy the 2CD edition of this album, which has a number of new acoustic songs as well as a second version of Black Swan Song. It makes the enjoyment complete.

5.0 out of 5 stars A spectrum of genuine muscianship, Jun 1 2010
By Q. Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Black Swan (Audio CD)
I can tell you why there have not been more comments for this album; although here in the U.S. there is a lot of music to sift through and a lot of genres to choose from, a lot of what is found has no substance. If someone were to listen to this Athlete CD as their first encounter with this band and criticize it without having ever listened to any of their other works then they are looking for a 'quick fix' for the season, as is the trend with generic music nowadays.
I have rarely encountered a band or musician who has consistently bridged the exploration and love for music as a means to tell about life as I have with this band. Vehicles and Animals in a sense (I feel) tells about their youth and ambition, as well as their fearlessness to experiment with sounds in order to convey the Athlete 'thumbprint' which gives their signature to the music they compose. Halflight is a little known EP that I believe focused on the lyrical content which could have stood on its own but it shows you also how they carefully weave the music to complement what is said. Tourist showed a lot of maturity and depth. It showed me that as much fun as they have playing music with each other, they also take it seriously... they never forgot how to be young still. Beyond The Neighborhood was a metamorphosis of the band. They took the fearlessness that they began with and fused the styles of the previous CDs in order to once again display the 'thumbprint' which highlighted the individuals that make this band. Black Swan is very genuine and this is obvious from the real life that is conveyed behind the music as is presented by the explanation of the songs and this music project as a whole. I respect this band because they know that they are nothing more than musicians and even if 'the industry' could not grasp their musical vision, they would continue to 'see' their music through anyway. I have found a diamond in the rough.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return to Form, Jun 8 2010

Athlete is back in the game with their 4th studio album, Black Swan. After Beyond the Neighborhood, which I couldn't really get into at all, Black Swan is a shimmering example of Brit Pop/Rock in the 21st century. It doesn't have the quirkiness of their debut. This album is most similar to Tourist, but it feels more upbeat. The only song I don't really like is Magical Mistakes. Other than that, excellent effort.
