Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In a plot shocking for its blatant familiarity, a figure identified as The Senator tipsily drives a young woman away from a party and off of a dock.A two-week PW bestseller and a BOMC selection in cloth, this novella is gripping and hallucinatory.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

YA-- ``She was the one he had chosen.'' This is Kelly Kelleher's thought as she leaves the party with a senator, as much a symbol of her desire to change her life as it is the fulfillment of a romantic dream. She's a young woman struggling to assert herself, but this rash move ultimately ends in tragedy. Oates makes readers feel that they are along for the very frightening ride in the car with Kelly and her senator in this shocking, all-too-familiar story. It's fast paced, almost as if to compel readers to keep up with the speeding car. Although brief, the book develops Kelly's character so well that the loss of such a young and promising life is deeply felt. The man sharing the last moments of her life is known only as ``The Senator'' throughout. Even for readers unaware of the true incident that was catalyst for this story, the novel stands strongly on its own . -- Carolyn Koehler, Richard Byrd Library, Fairfax County, VA

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Look at Politicians, May 14 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Black Water (Paperback)
People say this novel is about Ted and Mary Jo which is correct to a degree. However, it is also about the extraordinary efforts elected representitives will go to save their own hides when things go badly for them both privately and publicly. We saw that in 1969 and are seeing that now in regard to Iraq. Joyce Carol Oates is not only a great writer but also a woman who has enormous prescience and perception of the troubled world we live in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sigmund Freud couldn't say it better..., Mar 27 2004
By
"primus_maximus" (Geisenheim, HE, Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Water (Paperback)
If you think that Joyce Carol Oates "Black Water" is scientific book about the pollution of the sea you are far from it! You will (...) get a deep insight of Kelly's soul. If you want or not you will get deep into the relationship between Kelly Kelleher, a 26 year old girl who has a (...) affair with a senator of the United States of America and you will see abysses in his mind you had never guessed to be there. Without saying it Joyce Carol Oates takes you in a highly interesting tragedy of love, reputation and slowly coming death. The leaning against the accident caused by a Kennedy in 1969 is obvious.
Take this book to get an insight in human souls and what happens with them on the threshold to death so realistic that Sigmund Freud would smile in his tomb. I am still fascinated about how detailed Joyce Carol Oates described Kelly's feelings just before her death and can still feel the anger that has been caused by mendacious Senator. So it was easy for me to give 5 stars to the best book about the death I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure tension, Mar 26 2004
By
Christoph (Hessen, Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black Water (Paperback)
If you should describe the book in just one word, it would certainly be tension: The reader is immediately involved in a story depicting the tragedy of a young woman, Kelly Kelleher, who is fancied by an older but still powerful Senator. As the title already suggests the story does not come to a happy end as the Senator and Kelly have a car accident that leads to Kelly's death in the end. If you start reading this book, you won't put aside it until you have finished it.
