Product Description

They lie beyond the colour spectrum, but are so fundamental that you wouldn't be reading this without them. They are black and white, hues so basic they symbolise good and evil, negative and positive, life and death. From dice, and squad cars to zebra crossings, nuns, dominoes, and the ace of spades, Black & White is a wry graphic tour of the objects, animals, costumes, games, and other things that are reduced to their tonal quintessence. Small and chunky, this book works as a pop-culture gift book, a design meditation, and a graphic essay all in one.

About the Author

Steven Guarniccia is an illustrator and designer whose work has appeared in books and magazines, on greeting cards for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and on clothing for Swatch. He has had two one-person shows at the Illustration Gallery, has received silver medals from the New York Art Directors Club and the Society of Newspaper designers, and teaches a class called The Satiric Image at the School of Visual Arts. 5.0 out of 5 stars The coolest book on Black + White yet, May 26 2002

The reader is the beneficiary of this smart, deep collection of obsessive compulsive creators. I loved the witty writing and the deep well of art and commentary. I've given this book out as a gift to my clients as a way of opening their eyes and really seeing true design integrity. After looking at the world in black and white, color somehow seems like a cheap gimmick.
