Amazon.com essential video

When Ridley Scott's cut of Blade Runner was finally released in 1993, one had to wonder why the studio hadn't done it right the first time--11 years earlier. This version is so much better, mostly because of what's been eliminated (the ludicrous and redundant voice-over narration and the phony happy ending) rather than what's been added (a bit more character development and a brief unicorn dream). Star Harrison Ford originally recorded the narration under duress at the insistence of Warner Bros. executives who thought the story needed further "explanation"; he later confessed that he thought if he did it badly they wouldn't use it. (Moral: Never overestimate the taste of movie executives.) The movie's spectacular futuristic vision of Los Angeles--a perpetually dark and rainy metropolis that's the nightmare antithesis of "Sunny Southern California"--is still its most seductive feature, an otherworldly atmosphere in which you can immerse yourself. The movie's shadowy visual style, along with its classic private-detective/murder-mystery plot line (with Ford on the trail of a murderous android, or "replicant"), makes Blade Runner one of the few science fiction pictures to legitimately claim a place in the film noir tradition. And, as in the best noir, the sleuth discovers a whole lot more (about himself and the people he encounters) than he anticipates.... With Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, and M. Emmet Walsh. --Jim Emerson

This version sucks. The original version is good and the new final cut even better as it has missing scenes included. I like the narration as it was in the original, I dont care what ridley scott or ford thought. I do like the original ending as well. I had to give it one star as I have to give it something. The price is waay to high as usual. Amazon chooses to rake canadians over the coals over the prices and not make the prices closer as our dollar is strong. I go to the U.S. site as even with the exchange it ends up cheaper. Nice, thats why I get most of my movies from columbia house, they dont shaft canadians as much. Anyways in ending buy another copy for a little more and you get all versions that way whichever version you like you have for sure and the others for show.

1.0 out of 5 stars Original Version Please!, Feb 4 2003

As others here have said, why just the director's cut? Where is the original with the voice over? I like them both, but prefer the voice over version. Why hasn't the original with voice over come out on DVD? Why not put both versions on this one? For that reason alone this DVD gets 1 star. Which is sad, because this is definitely a 4 or 5 star movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best sci-fi ever, Aug 6 2007
Blade runner is one of the best sci-fi movie. As said befor by many, the director's cut is a little better than the original, I have personally seen the three version, the original theatrical version, wich is very soft has been released only on VHS, the international version (with the naration of Harrison Ford) is a little harder with more goulish sequece (this version has been release on Laserdisc) and finaly the director's cut wich give more insight of the caracter of Deckar and the possibility that he may be a replicant himself without knowing it as Rachel. But hey wait good news who loved that movie. Warner will release december 18th 2007 a 5 discs box set and gess what all three version will be available and a new final cut of the movie will be also availaible plus some extra of course here's the link to get more informations at amazon.com [...]
