5.0 out of 5 stars A very interesting and helpful explanation, Nov 1 2007

(HALL OF FAME)    (TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
David Phillips and his colleagues have produced a helpful and informative little book that offers some very reasonable and intelligent explanations as to why we are going through some very strange weather patterns over the last while. They believe that a lot of the phenomenon of 'wacky' weather can be explained as normal when averaged out against the backdrop of highs and lows over the past century. Freak storms, severe droughts and prolonged cold snaps are all part of the bigger picture and not restricted to the last decade or so. While the authors of this illustrated study do not rule out the possibilities of the earth going through a warming spell, these current extremes might be due in in part to us being made more aware of a higher incidence of meterological change around us. Statistics show that occurrences like El Nino happen on a regular basis and carry with it certain effects, which over time can both dramatically and subtly change the way we live. What is so neat about the book's contents is the descriptive detail offered on how these weather systems form and transform the landscape. For my money, this is one of the most entertaining and easy-to-follow books on the workings of the natural world. Having said this,I would still like to see the authors do an update on the latest research on the subject of climate change.
