4.0 out of 5 stars You must become a soul reaper May 10 2008
By E. A Solinas HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Ichigo Kurosaki is just your average teenage boy... except that he can see spirits.

So it's not exactly surprising that he gets involved in wild, dangerous adventures, in the first season of the hilarious, action-packed "Bleach." It starts off a bit slow, but rapidly winds into a thrilling, expansive adventure story, with lots of big swords, roaring monsters, and TV psychics.

One night a strange girl appears in Ichigo's bedroom, and is shocked when he can see her. She explains that she's a Soul Reaper, who helps the dead pass on to the Soul Society, and destroys evil spirits called Hollows.

But when Rukia is injured in a fight with a Hollow, all her powers are transferred to Ichigo -- and with them, the responsibility of killing Hollows. Ichigo soon finds out that it isn't easy juggling his new responsibilities with his normal, everyday life -- especially since the powerless Rukia is now attending his school, and living in his closet.

Even more distressing, his new powers are attracting all sorts of trouble: the Hollow who murdered his mother, the now-monstrous brother of his ditzy friend Orihime, an outspoken "mod-soul," and classmate Uryu-- the last of the Quincys, sworn enemies of Soul Reapers. Moreover, Orihime and the gentle giant Chad start developing spiritual powers of their own.

But then two powerful Soul Reapers show up to arrest Rukia. Ichigo is left mortally wounded and robbed of his powers, while Rukia is taken back to the Soul Society to be executed. To rescue Rukia, Ichigo agrees to undergo a terribly training regimen that could leave him worse than dead... and the journey into the Soul Society may be even worse...

Most long-running series run out their welcome pretty quickly, or start following a formula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome May 5 2009
Format:DVD
BLEACH season 1 has tons of action and hilarious moments along with incredible fight scenes and plot. This season focuses on the main characters Ichigo and a soul reaper named Rukia. Soul Reapers are somewhat of a grim- reaper type entity. A Soul Reapers' job is to send good spirits straight to a place called the Soul Society. But when good souls are transformed into bad souls (hollows),they are cleansed by killing them with a special sword called a Zanpakuto before going to the Soul Society.

This item puts a new twist on sword fighting making it great for fantasy and action fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny Dec 8 2009

I've been around the block when it comes to anime and the like and there is a darn good reason why Bleach is so popular. Its good. Plain and simple. If you like the series get this set, lots of nice goodies with it and if you are simply curious about Bleach get this set, you will be rewarded. Don't need to say anything else, it stands on its own. Enjoy :)

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best multiple season anime's out there! Sept. 13 2012
By John Thomas Anderson TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Bleach is another one of those multiple season anime series from Viz along the lines of Naruto, Inu Yasha, Ranma or Dragonball Z. And it's equally as good if not better. At least for the first three seasons at which point they caught up to the manga.

This box set is Season One. It consists of 20 episodes and like Inu Yasha or Naruto; is a perfect blend of comedy and action. In fact, next to Naruto; I consider this the best of this type of multiple season anime series out there!

What makes it so good? Well......., at first it looks like your typical monster of the week anime as Ichigo gets drafted by Rukia into becoming a substitute soul reaper to fight demonic spirts called Hollows. But unlike a lot of anime series that tend to get into a rut at this point; this series keeps bringing in new characters or developing old ones. Tired of Ichigo and Rukia fighting Hollows? No problem, suddenly secondary characters like Orihime and Chad start developing powers of their own. Tired of Hollows? No problem, suddenly other Soul Reapers appear from the Soul Society to arrest Rukia. It ends with Ichigo and company heading off to the Soul Society (after life) to rescue Rukia. As you can see, the first season box set never gets boring!

The same is true for the two season sets that will follow this one. In season two they will have to break into the Soul Society and a most screwed up society it is. With Guard Squads and various players within them as they constantly introduce new and interesting fighters. And by the time season three roles around, you'll have Soul Reapers fighting Soul Reapers and alliances up the yahoo! 63 episodes in total in this one monstrous story arc!
