"The New Captain Shusuke Amagai" arc (episodes 168 to 189), an anime-only adventure that ran during season nine of the beloved supernatural adventure Bleach, gave creator Tite Kubo the time he needed to develop the main storyline in print. When Ichigo agreed to protect Soul Society princess Rurichiyo Kasumioji, he inadvertently got himself involved in a complex set of schemes and counter-schemes in the uppermost echelons of the Soul Society. The sinister Kumoi plans to seize control of the Kasumioji clan by forcing Rurichiyo to marry the well-intentioned but immature Prince Shu. He's also been involved in the secret and illegal research the clan has been conducting into the creation of bakkouto--powerful swords that consume the user. At the center of the action is Shusuke Amagai, the newly appointed captain of Squad Three of the Soul Reapers. He and Ichigo seesaw between being enemies and allies, and soon the Seireitei, the realm of the Soul Society, is in chaos. Director Noriyuki Abe deftly balances Ichigo, the goodhearted protector of the weak, and Ichigo, the deadly duelist, and the plot features some surprising twists and turns. But it's a real jolt when the characters move from this self-contained story to the "Arrancar vs. Shinigami" arc (episodes 190 to 205), which continues the central plot. Back in the Hueco Mundo, Ichigo has defeated the redoubtable Grimmjow, but the higher-ranking Espadas--Hollows who have evolved to new levels--are too powerful for him. Ishida and Renji are trapped by the puppets of the sniggering Szayel; Chad lies unconscious after his last battle. Nel reveals her true form as a buxom woman when she aids Ichigo against the maniacal Nnoitra. But the set ends on a cliffhanger, with all heroes effectively out of commission. (Rated Teen: suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent end to a Decent Season but... Jan 13 2012
By Helmut von Seydlitz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
So this dvd has the end of the New Captain Arc. That is not exactly a bad thing and I actually found the season to be enjoyable. It wasn't as good as the main story line but I did like it more than the Bount Arc. There is a lot of action and parts of it remain funny too. They've struck a nice balance between serious and light-hearted, so in itself it isn't a bad season. If you wanted to you could skip over it of course but...

Episodes 190-193 are not part of the New Captain Arc!!!!!!!!! They are the continuation of the main story line!
The last four episodes in this set are the beginning of season 10. Now one could always say that Bleach does enough recaps during the episodes that one could continue the story when they come out with uncut box set 13...but these are not filler episodes. They are quality great episodes, and shouldn't be missed.

Bottom line: decent season, but if you want to follow the story you need to see the last 4 episodes on this set. I liked the season so I won't feel like I'm just paying for 190, 191, 192, and 193 but hey, to each his own.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Set/Series, but.... Mar 25 2012

I love the series and have bought every set up to this point, but the aspect ratio disappoints me on this one. From episode 190 onward, these episodes should be in 16:9 format, and why no blu ray? Even the extras for 190+ have widescreen, but they choose to crop to 4:3 for the episodes themselves. Why is this now being produced as though it's 2002? In 2012, just make a 16:9 release in HD.

5.0 out of 5 stars The filler gets really good. Oct 29 2012

The best Bleach story arc yet is what you get if you buy box set 12. The story about Rurichiyo gets hotter. The new Captain of squad 3 is actually the mastermind behind Rurichyo's assassination attempt. He has a grudge against Head Captain Yamamoto. Ichigo goes after the new captain to stop him from killing the Head Captain. This is a very cool story arc. We get a little bit of insight into the past of Yamamoto and a good look into the man's character. This is not a box set that you want to miss.
