Product Description

When Sienna Hegarty turns up at his family home one night, covered in blood and frozen in shock, psychologist Joe O'Loughlin finds himself drawn deep into her world, trying to unearth the dark secrets her mind has buried. The police find a major piece of the puzzle at Sienna's house: her father, a retired cop, is face-down in a pool of his own blood, his throat slashed and his skull caved in. The blood covering Sienna was his. The 14-year-old can't remember what happened that night but, at the same time, Sienna doesn't mourn her father's death. What was going on behind closed doors in the Hegarty household? Is Sienna guilty of brutal murder? And what part has her charismatic teacher Gordon Ellis played in this blood-soaked event?

4.0 out of 5 stars Predator, Mar 8 2012

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Bleed For Me (Paperback)
There are a couple of subplots, in addition to the main thread, in this latest Joe O'Loughlin psychological thriller. To begin with, there are the comings and goings of two dysfunctional families. One is, of course, Joe's, since in the previous entry in the series, "Shattered," his wife had asked for a separation. Then there is Joe's daughter's best friend, Sienna, whose domineering father reduces his wife and children to miserable and fearful individuals.

But more important to the novel is Sienna's relationship to a school drama teacher. And then she turns up at Joe's doorstep one night covered in blood. It turns out that her father was murdered, in Sienna's bedroom, and she is eventually arrested for the crime, putting Joe on a long journey to save her, if possible, and to uncover other wrongs.

The series continues to demonstrate the author's ability to combine elements of psychology with police procedural activity. He writes with authority, creating ever-mounting suspense along the way.

Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Introspective and suspenseful, Nov 3 2010

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bleed for Me (Hardcover)
First Sentence: i should start by telling you my name, although it's not really important.

Psychiatrist Joe O'Laughlin is trying to deal with having Parkinson's disease, being separated from his wife and only seeing his daughter part time. When his daughter's best friend is accused of murdering her father, a former police detective, Joe can't ignore his daughter's plea to help.

I'll admit I'm always excited when a new Robotham book comes out and, once again, he delivers. From the very powerful and disturbing prologue to the nail-biting ending, I was completely absorbed.

One thing I really appreciate is that, although this is the fourth book in the series, he doesn't assume you've read any of the previous books. Without burdening the plot or slowing down the story, within a very short period the author does an excellent job of providing a comprehensive back story on the characters. You never feel as though you've missed something. The portrayal of a couple who are amicably yet needfully separated is effective without being maudlin.

I don't know how accurate the psychiatry aspects are; it does seem Joe is, at time, a bit too insightful for belief, but it works and provides some interesting observations. Having recently served on a criminal-case jury; albeit not a murder, I found his comments on juries fascinating as well as the demonstration that, with motivation, anyone can be pushed to violence.

It's the balance of introspection and suspense that brings me back to Robotham every time. The plot is complex, twisty and fast-paced. I liked that all the clues were there to identify the killer--yet I didn't--and that justice prevailed. If you've not yet discovered him, Robotham is an author I definitely recommend trying.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book converted me to love of crime novels, July 9 2010

From the back cover:
Ray Hegarty, a highly respected former detective, lies dead in his daughter Sienna's bedroom. She is found covered in his blood. Everything points to her guilt, but psychologist Joe O'Loughlin isn't convinced. Fourteen-year-old Sienna is the best friend of Joe's daughter, and he has watched her grow up and seen the troubled look in her eyes. Against the advice of the police, he launches his own investigation, embarking upon a hunt that will lead him to a predatory schoolteacher, a conspiracy of silence and a race-hate trial that is captivating the nation.

Review:
Under normal circumstances I would never have read this book. It's a crime novel for one thing, but it's also a crime novel with the kind of plot device I've heard a hundred times before. But it was my book club's pick for this month and again I've read a book I never would have picked up and ended up really enjoying it. What I can't stand about most of the crime novels I've read is the sensationalist depictions of gruesome violence coupled with completely unrealistic reactions of the victims of the crimes - or if they're dead - the other characters in the books. There is just something too macabre for me in taking entertainment from the torture of other people. And the other thing I don't like is when the big reveal happens and we find out who the killer is there is no way I could have guessed it or worked it out from the rest of the story.

There was so much more to this book than I expected, it has all the elements that crime story readers will love - lots of complex story lines, a couple of unexpected twists, a few red herrings (one of which I fell for big time!) and a high adrenaline bombshell ending with all the elements neatly wrapped up at the end. And best of all, if only I'd been paying more attention I could've picked the killer straight away! Joe O'Loughlin is a great character (if a little bit of a ridiculous portrayal of a psychologist - I'm a psych myself and had a bit of a snigger at a few of the things he said). The characters are written realistically and their relationships are explored in interesting ways.

I would definitely read another one of Michael Robotham's books, and will be keeping my eye out for his next book about Joe O'Loughlin.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Big Thing, May 24 2011

This review is from: Bleed For Me (Paperback)
I've said before that Michael Robotham is the next big thing--an Australian who writes about England with authority. In one novel he studies the rivers and sewers beneath London, an incredible tour de force. One problem (noted by other reviewers) is that Robotham is truly an international writer, with books that appeal to all but are not published everywhere. Just remember--Amazon UK and British booksellers charge modest shipping fees; don't hesitate to get former Robotham novels that way. His next book, coming out in June, is a Vincent Ruiz novel, published by Mulholland, Little Brown's new crime imprint. Perhaps that means he's found an American publisher for the long haul. Let's hope so, because he's an A list writer.

Bleed for Me is a Joe O'Loughlin book, with an extended appearance by Vincent Ruiz. O'Loughlin is a psychologist living in Bath, teaching part-time. He is afflicted by Parkinson's and his marriage has disintegrated. Ruiz is a retired copper from the Met. He and O'Loughlin's paths crossed in the past and they make an exceptional team, the one blunt and physical, the other more cerebral and frail.

In Bleed for Me Joe's daughter's best friend has been accused of murdering her father. She appears to be the victim of abuse, perhaps at the hands of her father, perhaps at the hands of a charismatic but unctuous teacher. Simultaneously, Joe's wife Julianne is translating (literally) at the trial of three skinhead types, accused of firebombing the home of a family of asylum seekers. As Joe investigates, it appears that the cases are related, principally because of the appearance of a prison-tear-tattooed thug called 'the crying man'.

This is a long book, but the pages fly by, even though much of the plot is character-driven and the atmospherics are very textured. Robotham combines the British (Val McDermid, e.g.) tendency toward more leisurely narratives, filled with description and undergirded by a strong sense of place with the more urgent ethos of the American crime and suspense novel. While that appears to be a contradiction, readers of Robotham will know what I mean. He manages to capitalize on the strengths of each narrative style.

While the plot of Bleed for Me is complex, the narrative is easy to follow, the characters are clearly differentiated and the ending is very satisfying, though the mood is somber and world-weary. This is top crime fiction. If you have not yet discovered Michael Robotham, prepare for a wonderful experience.
