Product Description

Amazon.ca

The Blessed Hellride sees the multi-talented Zakk Wylde--Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist and frontman of the Black Label Society--play all instruments bar the drums yet, somehow, he manages to retain an intensity that Osbourne has sadly lacked for some years. Combining the bludgeoning heaviness of Black Sabbath, the deep Southern rock of the Allman Brothers and the flashy pyrotechnics of Eddie Van Halen, he delivers a series of crushing riffs and head-spinning solos. Stand-outs include the grand, dramatic "Blackened Waters", the stomping "Suffering Overdue" and "Stillborn", a pained lament for dead love featuring Osbourne himself. Of course, there are drawbacks. Wylde is clearly over-familiar with Black Sabbath's back catalogue and often his voice is near-indistinguishable from Ozzy's. Also, he lacks subtlety, as evinced by the clattering percussion that invades the otherwise melancholic closer "Dead Meadow". Even so, as heavy rock albums go, this is a really good one. --Dominic Wills

4.0 out of 5 stars More like 4.5 stars for this album April 25 2003
By Matt
Format:Audio CD
...The album starts with "Stoned and Drunk", which is a great start to the album. It's a more uptempo song, and the title pretty much is a fitting description of everyone who rushed out to buy the album. It's a heavy riff as usual, along with a blindingly fast solo. It starts off with a little bit of chickin' pickin', which is executed incredibly well.

Following this is the are the songs "Doomsday Jesus" and "Stillborn". "Doomsday Jesus" is one of the heaviest on the album, and is packed full of Zakk Wylde's signature pinch harmonics. "Stillborn" is the first single, which features the godfather Ozzy himself on guest vocals. It's a decent track, and makes for a good single.Other highlights include the slow stomp of "Suffering Overdue", the detuned Sabbath-esque "Funeral Bell", and the incredibly impressive "Blackened Waters". This song sees Zakk Wylde going into ballad mode at first, but then pummeling the listener in true BLS fashion.

While it is nothing really new, "The Blessed Hellride" proves to be their best yet, by taking the songwriting from "1919 Eternal" and the production of "Stronger Than Death" and creating one of the first solid rock/metal albums of 2003...

Mastery of chunky riffs, I was hooked to 'Stillborn' immediately after I saw rose from the Mainstream chart of Billboard.com. Cost was 17.99 and no regrets. It is a strange brew considering the first time I heard and saw this strange man in a spread eagle pose? Go back to 1991. No More Tears ring any bells because that was no other than Ozzy Osbourne in da flesh! Then after Osmosis, something f+cked. Less than three years later, he named himself and his 'back-up' band, Black Label Society. This was for the curious-minded @ heart. So don't mind reading this review over and over. Just expressing my thoughts in retro-time ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album but not very good quality sound Sep 2 2004

this album is a hell of alot better than its last thats for sure. the riffs are better the solos are not " i'm gunna play as fast as i can" they are planned out and fit perfecly with the music. amazing/outstanding work zakk! but the sound on the album isnt the greatest. the bass over powers the guitar at some points but eh thats not mr wyldes fault. but other than that i give this album 4.8 stars. great work zakk.

1.0 out of 5 stars junk
This is a redneck album, fueled by Zakk Wylde's racist beliefs. Anyone who gives this album more than one star is racist. btw, this is a miserable album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its not his best, but still solid
By BLS standards, The Blessed Hellride doesn't really match up completely with Sonic Brew, Stronger than Death, or 1919 Eternal. But those are some pretty big shoes to fill. Read more
