Product Description

Book Description

The profound Islamic veneration of the Virgin Mary is certainly part of the explanation for a remarkable flourishing of mystics within the Islamic tradition. This volume presents an inspired litany of praise to the Virgin Mary by a contemporary Sufi master. It sows a spiritual seed in the heart of the sympathetic reader with palpable initiatory power.

About the Author

Sheikh Muzzafer Ozak, who passed from the world in 1985, was born in Istanbul in 1916 into a Sufi family. He was educated by a succession of wise and learned teachers who instructed him in both traditional Islam and Sufism. He became Imam at a number of mosques, then left to run his bookshop in the famous Istanbul book market, which specialized in rare and antique books. He also became a prolific author in the Turkish language. For twenty years he was Sheikh (or spiritual teacher) of the Sufi order known as the Halveti Jerrahis. Extensive travels took him, not only throughout the Middle East but also to the Balkan countries, Western Europe and the United States where he founded a number of branches of the Halveti Jerrahi Order.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting insight into the life of Mary from the Islamic perspective, Feb 15 2008
By Gogol - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Blessed Virgin Mary (Paperback)
I am rather surprised this book isn't better known. Written by a Turkish Sufi Sheikh, the late Sheikh Muzaffer Ozak of the Jerrahi Halveti (Khalwati) order this book was written for the Western audience to provide them with an insight into the Islamic perspective on the life of the virgin Mary.

What is a surprise is that the differences between how she is understood in the Islamic world is of very little difference to how she is understood in the Christian one. The book covers her life beginning from her childhood and education to the birth of Christ to her final passing away.

The book is rather short and lacks any real reference or source for further reading but still, it is an interesting book in that I am not aware of any other of its kind in the English language.
