American actor Harvey Keitel stars in this modest Canadian thriller from the late 1980s. He plays a burned out former behavioural scientist and surveillance expert who has resigned from his career and withdrawn from his old life, now working simply as a motel manager in Ontario. But then he finds himself being strong-armed by local thugs into, reluctantly, employing his former expertise to keep tabs on one of his tenants. In the process, he discovers what may be an unrelated murder plot involving another one of the motel's clients. Lori Hallier plays the woman he fears may be in jeopardy. Lolita Davidovich (appearing early in her career as Lolita David in the credits) plays a prominent supporting role as a stripper and Keitel's guileless girlfriend. Written by Richard Beattie (Cold Sweat) and directed by veteran Canadian B-movie director Paul Lynch, this is a convoluted thriller that has some interesting ideas and effective atmosphere, but it is uneven in the actual execution. --D.K. Latta

1.0 out of 5 stars Cliché City, April 23 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: Blind Side (VHS Tape)
A pathetically bad movie. It used pretty much every general movie cliché you've ever seen in this type of thriller. The three lead actors (Hauer, De Mornay, & Silver) are all good actors in their own right, but it just doesn't work in this film. What started as a potentially good psychological thriller quickly deteriorated into a predictable cliché fest. The victims can only elicit so much sympathy from the audience when they keep making stupid mistake after stupid mistake. By the end of the movie, I was practically thinking, "Geez, they deserve what they're getting". Maybe a better title for this movie would be, "Sociopath Meets Dumb and Dumber".

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining though not outstanding, Sep 1 2003

The story moves forward well enough and has an element of suspense. The caliber of the acting is satisfactory plus, and the improbability and contrived sequence of events exert limits on the overall effect. Does not improve on, nor much vary, previous videos of this genre.
