Product Description

Product Description

Considered an unprecedented magnum opus when it arrived on two records in May of 1966 (1997's Time out of Mind is actually only about a minute shorter), Blonde on Blonde featured Dylan continuing to demonstrate remarkable powers over the course of 14 new numbers. Working in Nashville with session men and a few conscripted recruits (Al Kooper, Robbie Robertson), Dylan continued to bend minds with his warped lyrics and phrasing. Even dashed-off numbers such as "Obviously 5 Believers" and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" contribute to the crazed, fun-house ambiance. Dylan will never be this wild again. --Steven Stolder

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody must get stoned!, May 16 2008
By Kenneth Macleod (Port Elgin, ON Canada) - See all my reviews

How many unforgettable songs can one little, rock album contain? Rainy day women, Pledging my time, Visions of Johanna, I want you, Leopard-skin pillbox hat, Just like a woman, Temporary like Achilles, and Absolutely sweet Marie are all astonishing songs and you'll never forget any of them. You've never heard anything quite like any of them before.

"Achilles is in your alleyway. He don't want me here he does brag. He's pointing to the sky and he's hungry like a man in drag."

Blonde on Blonde is grounded in the blues and folk. It is a great example of Dylan's abilty to musically and lyrically celebrate the contradiction between the individual and the social group. It is one of those albums that is as enjoyable now as it was when music lovers bought it in the 60's (or 70's or 80's). It never gets old - it was old to start with. If any American pop music from our era lasts (in terms of cultural impact) it will include this record, I bet.

If you are looking for an example of what folks like best about his music, if you are buying the first of what will eventually be a collection of Dylan's best music, or if you want to fill a gap in your music collection that needs a slice of 1960's rock and/or blues then this is an excellent choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic and favorite, but what about the remastering?, July 10 2004
By R. Hutchinson "autonomeus" (a world ruled by fossil fuels and fossil minds) - See all my reviews

"Blonde On Blonde" is one of Dylan's three best albums, along with "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Bringing It All Back Home." This is widely agreed, and I won't write yet another review of this classic -- suffice it to say that if you have not yet heard it, you have quite an experience to look forward to. (See my "Memphis Blues Again" list of Dylan's 10 best.)

My review is for those considering an upgrade. I had it on wax for years (since 1974), and then the original CD. I was wary about the long-awaited remasters, given limited time and money and the amount of music yet unheard they are competing with -- I finally decided that if there was one Dylan album I would most like to hear with state-of-the-art sound, it was "Blonde On Blonde." Hoping to be astounded by the difference when listening to the original CD and the new remastered one back-to-back, I was disappointed. Yes, there are places where there is more detail, but on balance, my conclusion is that the slight improvement does not justify the expense. So my recommendation is, unless you have expensive enough equipment to maximize the SACD format, the old CD sounds just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars When he paints his masterpiece!, Jan 1 2005
By Mark Soderman (Union, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This truly is one of the three essential Dylan works (hwy 61 revisited, Blood on the Tracks). It is a double album full of lyrical and musical genius.
