Product Description

From Amazon

Characterizing the adolescent experience as monstrous is not exactly a new idea. M.T. Anderson's woefully confused teen vampire in Thirsty and Jean Thesman's reluctant young witch in The Other Ones serve as excellent examples of this metaphor set to fiction. But no one really captures how our hormones make us howl as well as Annette Curtis Klause. Blood and Chocolate chronicles the longings and passions of one Vivian Gandillon, teenage werewolf. Her pack family, recently burned out of their West Virginia home by suspicious neighbors, has resettled in a sleepy Maryland suburb. At her new school, Viv quickly falls for sensitive heartthrob Aiden, a human--or "meat-boy," as her pack calls him. Soon she is trying to tame her undomesticated desires to match his more civilized sensibilities. "He was gentle. She hadn't expected that. Kisses to her were a tight clutch, teeth, and tongue... His eyes were shy beneath his dark lashes, and his lips curved with delight and desire--desire he wouldn't force on her... he was different." But Vivian's animal ardor cannot be stilled, and she must decide if she should keep Aiden in the dark about her true nature or invite him to take a walk on her wild side.

Klause poetically describes the violence and sensuality of the pack lifestyle, creating a hot-blooded heroine who puts the most outrageous riot grrrls to shame. Blood and Chocolate is a masterpiece of adolescent angst wrapped in wolf's clothing, and its lovely, sensuous taste is sure to be sweet on the teenage tongue. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly

When a 16-year-old werewolf falls in love with a human, she begins to live uncomfortably between two worlds. Klause propels her bloodthirsty tale with "darkly sexy prose and suspenseful storytelling," said PW. Ages 14-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Chocolate (And Maybe Even Blood), Feb 18 2008
This review is from: Blood and Chocolate (Mass Market Paperback)
I am very surprised at the reaction many people have to Vivian, the lead character. Many seem to be revolted at the fact that she is strong, unapologetic and sexual. I found her downright lovable for this. How many female literary figures do young girls have to look up to that are beautiful, smart, tough and interesting, with absolutely no apologies? Practically none, aside from Vivian, spring to mind.

And how many paranormal novels manage to be both simultaneously surreal and relatable? This one does. Also, the plot progresses very smoothly, with characters that don't stay completely static throughout the entire story (which I find is a big problem these days, especially with YA fiction). A great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It!, April 30 2004

Honestly I loved it! It's technically a YA novel but so well
written that I found myself completely engrossed after only the
first few pages. The main character was confident and sensual without being completely overdone. She even had a few flaws that made it possible to sympathize with her. Overall a book that not only appeals to YA readers but people of all ages who enjoy a well written, fast paced werewolf novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confidence isn't a crime, Jan 23 2011
This review is from: Blood and Chocolate (Mass Market Paperback)
Vivian is confident which I see some people have an issue with. The thing is, this is truthful. Yes the majority of girls in the teen years are believed to be awkward and insecure, but is that really what we want to tell young readers? That it's okay and normal to be like this? Also, while yes most at 16 are in their gawky phase, there are girls out there who have been getting male attention since a young age and it is REAL, which means it should also be adressed just like teenage insecurity. There are spectrums and everyone is different. So that being said, I do like Vivian even if calling other girls "girl" and telling them to watch out isn't my thing personally, but still. That's not really a huge deal. The book in my opinion is decently written, maybe not my favourite writing style but I am very biased as I'm a fan of Lilith Saintcrow kind of writing.
It makes you think, it has depth, it has romance but isn't hosed in it to an amount that makes you want to vomit or throw the book against the wall.
