Excellent vampire story., Dec 17 2001

I'm not familiar with vampires or should I say books about them. However anyone can enjoy this delightful book about Desidra the vampire who helps out the USA in WW II. The story starts in Seattle and she serves as a code breaker in Anchorage, AK and "travels" to Japan. There is romance and intrigue. In the end you will have to decide who is more thirsty for blood and territory, humans at war or vampires?The plot is good, the descriptions and dialogue are believable and the historical and cultural facts seem well researched. Brian Herbert is best known for his Dune prequels, not vampire novels, but he and Marie Landis produced this most enjoyable little story and I think it is a jewel.

In school I loved studying about World War II, and the code talkers were always interesting to me. Plus the fact that they used Native American languages in order to confuse and deceive the enemy was pretty ingenious to me. When I saw that this book had vampires (REAL ones, not that Twilight crap), code talkers, and World War II in it, I thought I died and went to heaven!
This book was made using the old school World of Darkness rules, and those are my favorite type of vampires, the new World of Darkness is just lame and a numbers game to me. However the vampire powers are kinda all over the place. She can fly thousands of miles in minutes, she can alter her appearance to look like other people, turn into birds, use telekinesis, and read minds. I guess the author used the old OLD school rules where vampires could do anything if they made their own disciplines. Otherwise this character would be a master of Protean, Dominate, Thaumaturgy and Presence.
The story was pretty good, I liked that the main character had a sense of responsibility not only to vampires, but also to America. It was a little strange that after meeting the wounded Japanese soldier that after just talking to him for 6 hours she decided that she was in love with him. The final battle with the elder of her brood was kinda a disappointment, he just kinda gave up after 5 seconds.
All in all it was interesting. If you liked the old World of Darkness, check it out.
