Book Description

Jan 24 2011 John Pearce
John Pearce is in London, his problems being how to pursue Ralph Barclay for perjury without his written evidence, compounded by the needs of his companions - the Pelicans, who require protections from the Press Gang. A call on William Pitt is unsatisfactory - there is no immediate prospect of a return to the Mediterranean - so he has repaired to the Pelican Tavern in the faint hope that someone will recognise him and recall the night he was pressed. If so they might remember Barclay in the mix.
While sitting in gloom, he is approached by a well-dressed and amiable stranger who engages him in conversation, one in which Pearce outlines his dilemma; to even have a chance of seeing Barclay arraigned he must have funds and even with his due prize money and pay he is woefully short of what is required. The stranger, having introduced himself as Nicholas Fairbairn, tells Pearce he may have a solution, he being an unemployed naval officer and Fairbairn being in need of a sailor....Pearce is about to embark on another high seas adventure!

2.0 out of 5 stars Too little sea action. Dec 30 2010
By Will Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I have been reading this series and find the earlier books in the series to be much more enjoyable if you like action at sea. This book spends at least three quarters of the book on the love life of the main character and other land based matters. The fixation of the main character on getting at his arch enemy just does not come off at all. Read it to follow the characters but don't expect too much. Mr. Donachie has blown the series off the course of "naval" fiction.
4.0 out of 5 stars Another good read April 27 2013
By Scott Duncan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I like my books easy to read but with some historical context, this series provides both, please keep them coming.
2.0 out of 5 stars Blown off course is a good name for this book as the author has clearly lost direction. Mar 13 2013
By Stright Scoop - Published on Amazon.com

After beginning a series that had a good plot and cool characters. The filler has become over the top. Way to much referring back to the other books rather than new material. Lazy writing and not near enough of the ship action.
There should be a pub on the front cover instead of a ship. Very disappointed.....
