From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10 Blue Avenger (formerly David Schumacher) is back. Here, the teen is ruminating about the nature of free will, and about his girlfriend, Omaha. She is worrying that she and her single mother may have to move, taking her away from San Pablo High, and, even worse, away from him. Blue meets Tractor Nishimura, who has made millions from his movies for teen audiences, but still seethes over losing the chance to make the valedictory speech at the San Pablo High graduation 15 years earlier, just because someone found out that he planned to begin with the phrase "Tigers suck!" Tractor enlists Blue, because of his facility with words and codes, in a scheme to get back at the girl who turned him in and is now a license-plate censor for the state of California. If Blue can help Tractor come up with a license plate that hides the word "suck" well enough to get past the censor, he will be well rewarded. Unfortunately, this book is filled with far too many clever but undeveloped inserts such as full-page ads for KwikyRead, "the revolutionary new 'smart' way to read"; red herrings that ultimately go nowhere; and unnecessary asides on anything and everything. The characters from the earlier books are just as real as before, but the new ones are fairly one-dimensional. Teens who know Blue from the first two books will want to read this one; those unfamiliar with the series will not be impressed. -Susan L. Rogers, Chestnut Hill Academy, PA

From Booklist

Gr. 8-10. Using a narrative technique that resembles ensemble theater, Howe continues the story of high-school junior Blue Avenger (born David Schumacher), his family, and assorted acquaintances. Lacing sophisticated humor through provocative plot twists, this third novel finds Blue confronting a choice between a $7,000 reward he can share with his girlfriend, Omaha, whose mother needs financial help, and a million dollars to be donated to charities that don't benefit anyone he knows. What to do? Meanwhile, Blue's widowed mother has a boyfriend, a situation that causes Blue's middle-school-age brother to behave worse than ever. While Blue (who took his name from a comic book character of his own invention) obsesses about the nature of time, the narrator of the story toys with readers by introducing various pseudo-techniques for speed reading and improving reading comprehension. The result is rollicking good fun for readers who are savvy enough to laugh with a kid who is smart instead of at him. Francisca Goldsmith

Book Description

When David Schumacher, a 16-year-old high school junior from California, decides to change his name to Blue Avenger (after a comic book superhero he draws), his whole life takes on amazing new dimensions. No longer the shy and studious David, Blue sets out to right society’s wrongs, defend the underdog, and in this third book in the popular series, rescue his true love, Omaha Nebraska Brown, from eviction — a fate that would spell certain separation for Blue and Omaha. When a multimillionaire appears and tempts Blue to use his cryptographic capabilities to invent an off-color license plate and fool the prudish censor, will he take the bait? Underlying all the fun is the mysterious question: Is Blue a real-live boy from Oakland or has he become the comic book superhero he created?
