Review

'When I need something epic and lyrical I call upon Sjon.' Bjork'Weaves themes from Icelandic sagas, and romantic narrative art into a fascinating story in which present day ethical questions stand out.' The Nordic Council

Product Description

The Blue Fox is a magical novel.”—Bjork

The year is 1883, and the stark Icelandic landscape is the backdrop for this spellbinding fable that is part mystery, part fairy tale. The fates of a priest, a naturalist, and a young woman with Down syndrome are intrinsically bound and gradually, surprisingly unraveled.

"Sjon's fable...describes its world with brilliant, precise, concrete colour and detail while at the same time making things and people mysterious and ungraspable...The world of 19th-century Iceland is brilliantly and economically present: the bareness of the dwellings, the roughness of the churches and congregations, the meager food...The novel is a parable, comic, and lyrical about the nature of things."—A.S. Byatt for The Times

Sjon was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1962. A novelist, playwright, lyricist, and poet, he wrote the lyrics to Bjork’s hit songs “Isobel,” “Joga,” and “Bachelorette” and was nominated for an Academy Award for his lyrics to the music for the film Dancer in the Dark, directed by Lars von Trier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Skugga-Baldur: An Icelandic Legend, May 10 2010
By Daniel Gamboa - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Blue Fox (Paperback)
I can't believe this is his only book available in English.

The first chapter, with just a few paragraphs on each page, makes you feel you're right there in Iceland hunting for the blue fox. The second chapter is beautiful and moving. The third chapter is bizarre and esoteric. The fourth chapter I'm still trying to figure out.

A book that makes you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Icelandic fable, July 17 2009
By ANNE MITTER "CONCERNED CITIZEN" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Blue Fox (Paperback)
I thought The Blue Fox was mesmerizing and amazingly I had decided to read the book because a friend of mine had read it and thought it very strange (she didn't like it!). This novel should receive all sorts of prizes for the starkness of the landscape, the clever way Sjon conjures up the different people such as Abba,Fridrickson and most of all the priest Skuggason. I highly recommend this book - it makes you think. It is not a novel you read as a "page-turner" and then put it down and forget about it. It has a haunting quality and reminded me in some ways of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea
