3.0 out of 5 stars Interesante pero desorganizada, Oct 18 2009
This review is from: Bolivar Soy Yo (DVD)

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally a Colombian Film..., Nov 26 2003

This is a very critical and interesting film about one of the most important and traditional icons in the Colombian history and culture. The idea to bring back Simon Bolivar to our times is just hilarious and original. The whole story is an irony of the bitter situation of Colombia. I think the director (Jorge Ali Triana) did an excellent job displaying a collage in which the viewers get many different facets and perspectives of Colombian life. The acting of the main character is great (Robinson Diaz who has an obsession with Bolivar)and the setting is beautiful, it contrasts the present, the past, the urban and the rural spaces(Bogota, the country side, the little towns, the rivers, etc.). Unfortunately, the acting of some other characters is really limited and poor. Amparo Grisales for instance (still very pretty and attractive)fails the expectations of her fans.
The ending of the film is very strong and questions the future of Colombia. Do not forget to listen carefully to one of the songs played by Atercioplelados (Colombian alternative music band)when the movie is over and the screem is showing the cast...it is very cool (I have not found it yet in none of their CDs).
In order to enjoy better this film you should review the history of South America (particularly the ninetheen century)and get familiar a little bit with the figure of Bolivar otherwise you will miss many important details of it.
Other Colombian films I recommend to readers are La Vendedora de Rosas, La Virgen de los Sicarios and Rodrigo D No Futuro (moving and thematically profound Colombian films but not accessible to everyone...)

3.0 out of 5 stars Don Quixote strikes again!, Jan 23 2010

The merit of the movie is not technical (a department in which you will notice some crapy work), and not even the script (that oversimplifies the psychology of the characters). What it is good about it is the story itself: a real life story of an actor going mad and people going along. This marvelous story reminded me Cervantes novel. I think they could have made (and did not) a master piece. The end result is very good though.

5.0 out of 5 stars The truth of fiction/the lies of history, May 26 2007

You m ust know a little bit about South American history to understnad this movie on a deep enough level to think it is great. From the on set history is changed in the filming of a telenovela in order to increase popularity. This happens all the time in the telling of history. The other part that I love is th esupport the crazy modern Bolivar character gets from the people because they still want a Gran Colombia. Hugo Chavez and his Bolivariano movement, is trying to achieve this same thing and he has quite a bit of support [not from the USA, of course]. This movie involves history and current events, not to mention how life and people are sometime just plain funny. It is worth the money and time to see.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN UNKNOWN MASTERPIECE, Oct 29 2009
By Alfredo R. Villanueva - Published on Amazon.com

The premise of this movie is quite simple: if Simon Bolivar reappeared, even in the figure of a TV actor, how would those around him react? Would history repeat itself? Both the government and the guerilla want the charisma provided by the fictional Bolivar, whose enormous popularity stems from the fact he stars in everybody's favorite soap. The movie blurs fiction and reality, past and present and the outcome is both predictable and horrifying. Bolivar is betrayed and abandoned a second time. It is made clear how the left and the right "construct" a Bolivar that will suit their political ends, and it is chilling to hear the "mad" actor quote passages from Bolivar's writings verbatim. The balkanization of the Bolivarian dream began even as he fought for it. See it together with the excellent "Manuelita Saez" for another version of the same betrayal.
