GREAT CD, with a Country touch on some of the tracks. The rest, it's a little different from the rest of the music genre. Kim Stockwood is surely one of the greatest Canadian artists out there, who has been wayyy under-rated. Kim can kick many Tragically Hip's ass... or Great Big Sea's (who's a terrible East Coast band, by the way).
"Jerk" is a fun tune, though its lyrics may be as simple as they get... some of the other tracks, like I said, give a great Country touch to them. While, the rest...lets just say I will guarantee you to put this CD on, cranked up, when I visit (and drive around) Newfoundland in the future ;-)
Unfortunately, I don't hear anything from her anymore since her 2nd release...
Anyway...Bonavista, here I come!!!!!!!

From the first note this album promises sort of a Newfie style Lucinda Williams sensibility and delivers that type of vibe through the whole thing.

There are two versions of this album that I have seen. The first release does not have the song Jerk on it and instead has a song called Strong As I Have To Be which in my opinion makes the first release a better album. Why they choose to leave that terrific song off the 2nd release is beyond me as it shows off Kim's talents really well, with direct, clear lyrics, a catchy rocking melody, good accompaniment and her warm yet ballsy delivery.

Standouts for me were, and are, Love When You Need Love, the abovementioned Strong As I Have To Be and especially A Good Man which is a heartfelt tribute to damn good fathers everywhere. (and especially her own) A Good Man is the kind of a song that will get played at funerals for years to come (already has been.) It may not have ever made number one on the radio but that type of vote is about as high a rating as you can get.

However this is an album you can play right through and not find a clinker. To me this is essential Canadian listening especially if you like a Newfoundland flavour in your tunes. (and who doesn't?)
