Fantastic story, but not the best printing,
By Toban_Frost (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bone: One Volume Edition (Paperback)
This book is excellent. The story is wonderful, and it's a truly fantastic work of fantasy from start to finish. Great characters, great humor, great stories, absolutely beautiful artwork. I could go on, but there are likely a ton of reviews that will review the story better, and do it more justice. So yeah this is a great buy. For the most part you will get your money's worth for this price, however there is a downside. While there are so many things one can say in favor of this book, the only downside to buying this as is, is that I found the binding to be a tad cheap. Withing a couple days the glue on the spine started cracking, and the cover started to peel a bit. Maybe the binding was cheap, maybe it wasn't. Maybe it was simply a matter of trying to bind too much book, in a paperback. Who knows. Either way my book fell apart. It might happen to you as well. So long as you're not fussy about keeping a book like this in pristine shape, just buy it and enjoy yourself. If you want something higher quality, you might need to spend the extra cash and get this one instead. Whichever copy you decide, I guarantee you're getting your money's worth. Maybe even more. No matter what, Bone is a must read for fantasy fans, and comic book readers alike. Enjoy.

Epic Cartoon Fun,
By
This review is from: Bone: One Volume Edition (Paperback)
Bone: One Volume Edition is definitely the way to read Jeff Smith's epic story of the Bone family. The book follows the adventures of the three Bone cousins (Fone, Phoney, and Smiley) as they get run out of their home and become lost in a mysterious valley. At first the story and characters seem innocent enough, but as the story progresses the layers of deep history, unique characters, and grand storytelling are peeled back.Jeff Smith is a superb illustrator and manages to infuse his cartoony characters with just the right amount of charm and personality. This book is presented in black and white, and the skill with which he uses the darks and lights to create scenes is excellent. The writing is top-notch, with deep characters and locales. All the characters have their own motivations as the story unfolds, and they keep true to those motivations until the very end. The story is a very long one, but overall the pacing is well-done, and I believe most people will appreciate the depth with which Smith explores his world. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who loves comic books or just pure fantasy. It is much different than most graphic novels out there, and refreshing because of its uniqueness. You'll be cheering Fone Bone along each step of his journey, and in the end be happy you took the time to travel along with him!

A new epic,
By Jonathan Friebel (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bone: One Volume Edition (Paperback)
The scope of this series took me by surprise. It opens in a very down-home sort of way, and gently widens it's horizons to aspects of a world surprisingly grand and beautiful. The black & white illustrations are amazing in their detail and emotion. The series has so many facets: humor of a particularly ingenious sort, action, monsters, history, magic, and fantastic places, all of which blend together seamlessly. Yes, in one volume it is real long, but this is preferable to only getting part of the series and missing a segment. Highly recommended!!!
