I read this book from the Illustrated Edition and I was truly amazed at all the research the author did to recreate a historical story of such a sad era in the history of our lives. His characters were so vivid in my mind as I read of their travels, their tremendous hardships, their friendship and bonds always at risk of being torn apart, the great risk that so many of them took, and their bouts with sickness and disease. His main character showed the desire to fight for the right to live and to learn and to always strive to better herself in a world where the opportunity and circumstances made it almost impossible. May God forgive those who fought to keep slavery, and truly bless those who fought to rid our world of such an abominable way of life. Thank you to the author, Lawrence Hill, for the research you put into this book. Reading the Illustrated copy and actually seeing pictures of "records from the Book of Negroes" made everything so much more believable and real. It is a tough book to read, but also a necessary book for all to read and to understand how far we have come and also how much further we need to come to give everyone the right to equality in this world where we were all created equal and need to be treated as such.
